What kinda phone you have? Most mobiles can play mp3's now and most have a fair bit of storage.
That or I would get a cheapo player in Currys
Picked up a 4 gig usb player in there for 15 euro a few months ago......not branded but for the money and what you want it for as well as the lack of a need for crap software that goes with it you'll be hard pressed to find a better deal........

i have the samsung ping touch

    http://www.carphonewarehouse.ie/product.php/773/40/samsung_ping_touch/06e39b0034a4dbcf212498058bcf60ae

i know i could use this as a mp3 player, just im looking for something very small and light.I would mainly be using this for the gym and a odd bit of walking etc.

im looking for a branded one because i actually bought my creative stone years ago refurbished for like 15euro.I like creative since its so easy and unrestrictive, plus its a quality brand that i have liked for the past few years.i like the new ipod shuffle just i have my own earphones so thats a no go.tbh im looking for a a mp3 player secondhand i suppose since its cheaper that will do the basics

    Seen anything here of interest?

I must admit, I normally use my phone for this sorta thing.
That 4 gig key was a handy bit of storage and the fact that it came with earphones was a bonus.

I kinda feel like I'm only every recommending one DAP to everyone anymore...but it's going to suit you perfectly as well:

Sandisk Sansa Clip, or it's replacement, the Clip+

I'd agree with you 100% on this.
Have the 8GB clip+ and it's a dream to carry around, almost forget I have it on me it's so light. And with rockbox it doubles it's value!
The screen is small but it's kept to the point. One of the best small MP3 players I've ever seen/owned.

And it's available in most shops, PC World carry them and most online shops.
Have generally only seen good reviews.

Also going to recommend installing the rockbox firmware onto it, even if you won't use the myriad of extra features it offers I'm sure you'll appreciate the extra bit of battery life it'll give the clip.

ok nice one lads, just got mine there and i love it.its tiny with a very functional screen that can do the basics.Where do i get the software anyway.i dunno if ill use the extra functions since i really only do shuffle songs anyway but i suppose the extra battery life wouldnt do it any harm

If you want to install rockbox you can use the automatic installer:

I think that rockbox is great (much better sound and longer battery) but I have been experiencing annoying issues with my clip+ since installling it. (uninstalling it doesn't fix them). clip+ now is very slow to turn on and off and will lock up. also the rockbox database will not work correctly for me. just a warning for those thinking of rockboxing their clip - it's still not really stable as of yet..

I have no such problems and have been using various rockbox builds on my clip+ for nearly 4mths now.

Have you tried formatting your clip+ and then reinstalling the original sansa firmware to see it that fixes your problem? perhaps there is a fault with your clip+ that has nothing to do rockbox? If formatting doesn't fix it you should contact the people working on the clip+ port by IRC to let them know about your issue as they'll know how to help you, if you can be helped that is.

    I agree with Mactard.
Just a note tho. Are you using the latest bootloader for the Clip+ ?
And if you're having problems with the database it's either your files or file system with problems, as I have been running it fine now for months also.

what's the latest bootloader version supported by rockbox for the clip?

The latest will always be current SVN.
But it's mostly kept up to date here
