    Hi All,

Title mightn't be great but meh. I hate to have to do this but I am in need of some hair styling advice from anyone who has an interest in retro/vintage/50's/rockabilly style, whichever!!

I need to do something incredibly retro with my hair for a photo next week. I have long brown (will probably be black by next week) straight hair, which takes curls but isn't overly keen on holding onto them for long. The style only needs to last about half an hour anyway though. It needs to fit into the 1950's genre, preferably housewifey but cute but if I can't do that without looking half decent then meh, any style of 50's will do.

Now, the obvious one to me is tie my hair back, curl the ponytail and stick a bow on it, with a little quiff or whatever at the front, but I feckin hate my hair up, especially for a photo!

If anyone can give me ideas or point to somewhere online to help me achieve a nice up or down look then I would appreciate it!

there's tons of really good videos for retro hairstyles on youtube. i'd link but my internet is being ridiiiiculously slow for some reason this morning! get one of those quiff (looks a bit like a tulle sausage) rollers from a hairdressing shop, roll and pin the front of your hair to it if you want something simple :)

If you don't want your hair up, try heated rollers as the curls will stay in unlike from a curling iron. Add a flower or fascinator for instant pin-up glamour!

Do a YouTube search for Victory Rolls. Simple and straightforward and managable. Thats will give you a basic 40's look.

After that you can experiment and add extra details like facinators.

Getting a hairpiece will let you do BIG hair for beehives and backcombing if thats more to the rockabilly style you want.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

Thanks everyone, couldn't sleep last night and found my way into some tutorials, looks like heated rollers are the best option for my hair and the style I want, goddammit I hate having to spend money! Can't look too pin-uppy because I'm meant to look demure and housewifey, don't ask!

Thanks for all your help, any more tips on how to do the styles greatly appreciated, bit crap when it comes to doing my hair nicely.

You'll definitely use the heated rollers again! For a more day to day look, carefully pull through the curls with a wide tooth comb to loosen them. They look lovely!

Thanks Twee, can you or anyone else recommend any particular rollers for a first timer?

Strawberry Koi has some of the best vintage hair tutorials on youtube I reckon! I've been following her for a couple of years now and she's as cute as a button!

I have an ancient set of Babyliss ones my aunty gave me, basically an old version of these I'm pretty sure Boots do them as well.

All you do is roll your hair in them, pin them in (pins included) and do a bit of hairspray. Great thing is that the pack comes with different sized barrels so the curls don't come out looking too perfect. Leave them in for around 20 minutes. I like to do my make up during this time :p When they're done, carefully unwind them, then you're left with lovely curls. You can then easily do one of the styles mentioned like the victory rolls or quiff. More hairspray after!
