Dell M770 crt issue with Mint 9

When I try to run the Mint 9 live disc the bios and "Boot automatically in x seconds" screens are displayed. Then the Linux Mint screen with the four green dots are shown. The monitor then goes into standby and is unable to be woken. I can get into a console by pressing ctrl+alt+f4.

There is no issue with the computer hardware as I have since installed Mint on the machine using another 13" Viewpoint (recognised as N-Vision 13") crt that I have, but I would like to get the bigger 17" monitor working. When I try to boot the now installed system with the Dell monitor attached the same thing happens. All connections are VGA. Does anybody have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    The machine specs are:
    Intel Celeron E3300 Socket 775 2.5GHz
    Gigabyte GA-G41M-ES2L G41 Socket 775 VGA 8 Channel Audio
Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm
    Kingston 2GB 800MHz/PC2-6400 Memory
    Linux Mint 9 (Gnome)

try this at the console, it should recreate a xorg.conf file for you
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Thanks for the reply. Before you posted I decided to try the live cd version of Mint 8. It loaded with no isuues so I installed it.

Can I try anything with the live cd version of Mint 9 or is it all read only?

I think if you tried installing 9 with the m770 connected from the outset you should have no issues.

I have tried that. Using the liveCD the Linux Mint screen with the 5 green dots is shown for a period of time then the screen goes into standby.
