The Jim Whitney Shield is organised and played at Enniscorthy. It's an inter-club regional competition for high handicap (18+) male golfers and is traditionally a fun day out but with an underlying tone of inter-club rivalry & competitiveness (sure, who doesn't want to win ;)).
Many clubs radiating out from Enniscorthy receive, by tradition, their yearly invite. However, with many clubs having cut back on teams and some fielding teams only for GUI inter-club tournaments some clubs have decided not to partake. In some cases, the members themselves have grouped together to field a team and play for the honour of their club and avail of what is great value golf.
Cost: €150 for team of 8 and a meal provided. There is also a prize for 1st and 2nd but these are more representative of tokens of victory rather than of great monetary value; after all it's the taking part that counts.
Format: Each club team comprises of 8 members usually in a four-ball - better-ball draw or foursomes. The best 3 or 4 scores are combined and the other scores are use to decide in a tie break. (I don't mark the board so don't quote me on the format :))

If you think your club would be interested OR a group of lads who would like to play for their from your club then please contact the office (see website) or PM me for full details. I'd imagine clubs from surrounding Counties would be interested as we have clubs from Waterford and Wicklow taking part. It will be held on Wednesday the 11th of August for 11:30am (sorry for the late notification :o)

Phone numbers on public sites are never usually a good idea...

Sorry, CharlieIRL. And 'fun' is what it's all about really when you're playing off 18+ you do your best but enjoy.

GreeBo made a good point about supplying phone number; I got so caught up in the moment :o

If anyone wants more details please PM me about the competition I don't mind.

Can anyone like to hazard a guess as to why the response to none GUI/ILGU events like this are in decline?
Are clubs now so poor that they cannot afford to enter non-GUI/ILGU tournaments?

Great days golfing at Enniscorthy for the Jim Whitney Shield and the weather was conducive to enjoyable golf. Shame other clubs in region found €150 too much of a financial burden for a team of 8 lads with a meal included! Or maybe it was because it wasn't GUI or the players were 18+ handicappers ;).
Thanks to all the clubs who took part and made the day a fun, yet competitive day out. Don't be too harsh on Enniscorthy winning on their own turf, this could be the only tournament they win this year. Last year, it was the only men's comp won in the club :(! Well done to Waterford who were runners up and one team carded 48 points. Commiserations to the other clubs and we look forward to see you all again next year P.G.
