IPad 3G - Don't up date carrier settings

If any of you are have an iPad 3G and plan to take it with you on holidays this year then I suggest that you don't update the carrier settings when iTunes prompts you to.

I am currently roaming using my iPhone SIM and can do so free of charge because the APN settings can be manually set to live.vodafone.com

However, if you download the carrier settings to your iPad then it will set up the 3G network on one of the other APN addresses while also removing the manual APN setting facility

Won't you be stung for roaming charges?

Vodafone dont charge for roaming when accessing the net through the Vodafone Live APN, it comes out of your bundle no matter where you are worldwide

This is correct as long as you are roaming using live.vodafone.com APN settings. These settings are default for an iPhone but not for an iPad plan. Also, if you teether using a non-jail broken iPhone the APN settings will automatically switch to different settings that will hurt your pocket very much

Does this work for prepay data sims or is it just contract ?

I have an iPad contract plan with Vodafone - 3.99 per day option. If I go into cellular data it says apn hs.Vodafone.ie but I can owerwrite this. Should I overwrite it to live.Vodafone.ie to get free roaming?

Not a typo. You don't pay anything on days you don't use cellular data. My iPad is nearly always on home wifi but I want the option of having 3G data particularly if travelling.

so much data do ya get per day

If you can overwrite it with the live APN you're fine. When I got my iPhone you could write in your own APN, but when I updated the carrier profile that option disappeared. So I'm not taking that chance with my iPad

a restore will remove the carrier file

thanks! Using Vodafone for data is a no brainer in that case!

I did download a carrier file when I got the pad 2 weeks ago but I am still able to overwrite the apn settings

The APN setting option is not removed in iPad. You are free to adjust the APN at will.

In addition, by joining Vodafone 360 (and losing some of your marbles in the effort), you can double your daily allowance to 100mb -for 39c.

You can use a prepay: 99c a day for 50mb anywhere with the live APN. Sign up to Vodafone 360 and get that amount doubled for 39c a day.

So my current ipad contract is €3.99 per day for 500mb. If I change the apn settings from hs to live, do I get 50mb for 99 cent both in Ireland and while roaming or do I still pay €3.99 for 500mb ?

I understand that these tariffs apply to prepay and not to contract though much confusion reigns over Vodafone's data policy abroad. All I can confirm to you is that you can get 50mb per diem to enjoy abroad @ 99c out of the box on a prepay and if you follow my recommendations, you can in fact enjoy 100mb a day for 39c.

Thanks. Sounds like I'd be better off going in to a VF store and buying a prepay microsim...if they'll sell me one.

I've restored my iPhone twice since the sly gits (3) managed to get their carrier file onto it, and neither one has removed it. I keep meaning to get on to Apple about how to remove it as I'd rather not have to jailbreak it, but it is looking increasingly like that is what I'll have to do....

They'll just give you one, that's how I got mine. It's a basic human right :D

Mine now lives in my iPad when out of the country.

But was that you upgrading your old sim to a new microsim?

Can I walk into a vodafone shop and buy a new prepay micro sim, top it up €20 and use that in my ipad on the vodafone 360 rate? How can you even sign up to the 360 rate from an ipad? Cheers culabula ;)

It was, but it was still a new blank SIM, which you can both request and insist upon. You could simply be putting this in an iPhone 4, so it's no concern of theirs what you want it for.

Register it on Vodafone.ie then sign up to 360 on the same website (3rd tab along IIRC). You will age visibly but it will be worth it in the end.

Stick 20€ on. Change to LIVE! APN and off you go. If you have successfully signed up to 360 you will be debited at the 39c tariff.

You could also buy a 5Gb add-on with that 20€ if you preferred -handy for use within the state and a damn sight cheaper than 3,99 a day.

I tried that 5gb add on before but it wouldnt work, they told me it was only for the vodafone mobile dongle. they kindly credited it back to me.

Successfully applied it once myself on my voice SIM -got the free texts and calls to Vodafone by dint of topping up by 20€, then converted into 5Gb of data in /extras. Worked a charm.

If you sign up to 360 it sounds like you pay the extra 39 cents every day regardless of whether you use data but you only pay 99 cents for data on days you use data. Am I reading this correctly ?

    From vodafone.ie:

The Vodafone 360 pay as you go bundle

If you buy a phone that's Vodafone 360 tailor-made or compatible, you'll probably start using data more often. With our new promotional
pay as you go bundle* you pay only up to €12.09 per month (based on 31 day month), deducted from your pay as you go credit balance in equal amounts each day. You must top up by €20 in one month to get the bundle.
You'll also get a daily allowance of 100MB (up from 50MB on our standard rate), and it'll cost €1 per MB after your allowance is used.
To get the Vodafone 360 pay as you go bundle, register for Vodafone 360 and start 360 services. Then we'll automatically switch you to the new rate. (And if you stop using the 360 services, we'll automatically switch you back to the standard daily rate of 99c per day).
    * Offer available until September 30 2010

Absolutely NOT. You only pay 39c IF you use it.

Was that with the Live.vodafone APN or the hs.vodafone APN?

This was BiP -before iPad - and I don't rightly remember. Used it for the month in both MiFi and iPhone. Pretty sure I wasn't using the LIVE! APN, though.

Am willing to try it again at the end of this month when I got to France to see just what I can use while over there. In any case, 39 or 99c a day is better than anything native you can get in France, iPad SIMs notwithstanding.

They've been saying that since forever, so I won't believe it until they pull the plug. They also say you have to top up by 20€ but you don't. I just put 10 on last time and I instantly got the 39c rate.

Can you really just use the same microsim from an iPhone 4 in the iPad? I thought it had to be a seperate, data only sim.

I followed the advice in this thread - bought a vodafone pay as you go microsim, signed up to vodafone 360 and changed the APN setting - and I am now in france and appear to be paying 2 euro per day.

I reckon I'm just on the European roaming deal on this link:

    http://www.vodafone.ie/internet-broadband/internet-on-your-mobile/abroad/?ts=1293703095018

Have the rules changed since the other threads in this post?

Not a bad deal really anyway, but would prefer 39 cent!

Thanks for the advice btw - so glad I didn't get an iPad microsim!

Yes, this changed on the 24/11. It's now 2€ a day for a paltry 50mb a day. It's a terrible deal IMO and a regrettable move. It does appear that were you to apply 20€ credit, buy the 5Gb add-on in "Extras", you may then avail of that 5Gb while abroad, as long as you use the Live! APN and are prepared to be penalised 2€ each day that you avail of it. However, this remains unconfirmed.

Cheers - yeah I got the 5GB as well, but I'm not sure I want to take the risk of going over my 50mb here in France to check if I can avail of it abroad!

As far as I know, you can via the Live APN: why not go over by a couple of Mbs to see?

Bad news I'm afraid. Went over the 50mb last night and it took 4 euro worth of credit rather than dipping into my 5GB add-on.

    Ah well... Happy new year

That sucks.....damn them anyway, that's me and Voodoo Ireland no longer friends. What a lunatic situation to go from 39c abroad for 100mb to 2€ for 50mb.

There is another solution for France, which i used last month. Buy an iPad SIM from BouygueTel for 10€. Lasts two days, is very fast and no limit on data (I used mine in my MiFi and had 5 yokes connected to it). After that, it's a ridiculous 6€ a day, but I just got another one for 10€ for another two days.

Here's the best bit, though. You fill in a form and get the 10€ back :-)

Often the APN is embedded. Just check it in settings. Think it's ebouygtel.com for Bouygues. If you revert to Vodafone in Ireland, make sure the APN is live.vodafone.com for 39c a day or isp.vodafone.ie within the State if using up the 5Gb.

The Bouygues is the best bet on the French market although rumour has it there is some half-decent offering from the Auchan supermarket. SFR is a joke (capped at 75mb a day) and Orange don't offer a PAYG. Orange do offer a complicated Mobicarte SIM which, via a long process will give you data on an iPhone 4 at a very cheap rate of around 12€ for the month (it's called Internet Max). But the same SIM will not work in Mifi, iPad or anything else.

With Bouygues I was online in 5 minutes and speeds were impressive.
