Hi, I'm looking at doing a make up course at a basic level/for beginners. I've been looking around and they're extremely expensive. So i was hoping for reccommendations from any boardsies that have done them or know of anything good? Thanks so much!

My friend did a course in the LA Makeup academy last year and she's always raving about it so maybe give them a try? She's now a working make-up artist and she said it's the best thing she ever did. I'd say places will have installment packages now with the economy being so bad

I did mine with LA Make-Up. I can honestly say it's worth every cent.
You have fantastic tutors, excellent facilities, excellent products to work with, photoshoots and you can attend as many classes and photoshoots, for up to twelve months.

Honestly, and being blunt, pay peanuts, get monkeys.

La is intense. There's a lot in it. You recieve your diploma, and it's a good academy to be associated with.
    But it

How much did you pay for yours? Zoe clark was recommended to me also, its 560, i think la is 600? Thanks a million for the replies!

did you find you got much from it it terms of skill and being able to do make up for others well?

I did a course in The Make Up Room which I think is closed down. Overall I didn't think it was great. The skill level wasn't high and the course was extremely basic. They didn't show anything creative, some of the looks were a bit dated too. The tutors seemed to look down on me because I did wear a lot of make up which I found weird.

I think the money would be better spent getting a few lessons from Mac. I'm not sure of the price but it's different to the normal application, I think an hour and half as well, and they show you how to do things. Doing this will make sure it's tailored towards you. I'd also highly recommend youtube for learning techniques, there are so many good tutorials there. There are also good websites like Specktra.net and Make up alley which are devoted to make up.

Thanks a million. I've been for two make up lessons with mac and i didn't find them that good to be honest. Both times i asked for something and came out completely different and the two make up artists gave me different shades of foundations, another time i was in browsing another girl picked out yet another shade of foundation for me so i don't have much confidence in mac!

does anyone know of any deals on beauty courses at the min

I'm not sure when this starts but it's cheap. The place is right beside Dundrum Centre. http://www.adultedtiernans.ie/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=105:make-up-artistry&catid=40:hobby

I did module 2 with LA, which was two weeks, and as far as I recall, was 895. The brush set was an additional 200.

    We covered
    skin types
    skin tones
    eyewash
    eyelashes
    choosing the foundation
    contouring

    day 2-
    bridal
    more detailed on the eyes.
    Blending ect.

    Day 3-
    concealing and evening makeup.
Colour correctors were part of this class.

    Day 4-
focusing on eyemakeup -- how to choose correct colours, make the most of the eyes and flatter different eyeshapes.

    Smokey eyes.

    Day 5-
    contemp bridal.
    Recap faceshapes
    recap eyeshapes

    day 6-
trends and do your own makeup

    Day 7-
    catwalk makeup/high fashion

    Day 8-
    print makeup.
    black and white makeup

    Day 9-
    day and bridal photoshoot.

    Day 10-
    recap faceshapes an eyeshapes
    foundations
    skin type
    perfecting the eyeliner flick
    lashes, strip and individual.

And anything else you're unsure of, they will also recap.

I did Module 2 in the LA Make-Up Academy as well and it was worth every penny! I learned so much and my make-up skills have seriously improved. I have to agree that you may need to pay a little extra to get the best value. The course I did was €895 which was great for what I got- all the tutors are really high-profile make-up artists and you get individual attention, especially if there's anything you're struggling with. Plus you get 2 free professional shots to start your portfolio. They're a really professional college, I'd recommend them to anyone!

i was looking at la but i've heard mixed reviews on them so i'm not keen on spending all that money when the feedback is 50/50.

I'm in between the portobello institute or zoe clark at the min. the portobello does itec which i'd like to have. has anyone heard anything about either

If you email them at LA, they'll allow you sit in on a complimintory class.
I'm sorry to keep raving on about that one, but it's just I don't know anything about the other ones.
There's no point in going on hearsay, what works for one mightn't suit you, so even see if you can sit in on classes in a few different courses, and see which academy suits you best
