DIY chip/gouge/scratch repair

The other day my beloved guitar popped off it's strap, hit a tiled floor and bounced. Luckily the neck didn't take any damage but there're two big scratches on the edges of the body (Where the binding would be if it wasn't such a cheap guitar)

The guitar wasn't that expensive so it's probably not worth my while getting it professionally touched up, but I've owned it for 15 years and want to own it for 15 more - is there anything I can do to stop the paint around the gouges from flaking or the wood from going funny?

In case it's relevant, it's an alder/mahogany body, cherry burst (scratches in the red bit :) ), it's an MIK Epiphone LP-100 so it's probably a poly finish.

Before you say it, yes, I'll get some strap locks.
