Just had man from dept doing spot check on slatted shed I put up under FWMS. He said there were a couple of cases where farmers hadn't paid their builder, got a receipt on the promise that they would pay them when the grant would come through, but still didn't pay up. The builders decided if they were'nt getting their money they were going to get their shed back. So they waited until nobody was around and arrived with all necessary gear and left the farmer with just a tank. The dept then has to reclaim the grant. Very messy.

When I did my shed 2 years ago my builder never paid the slat supplier - he arrived one evening with a lorry to take them up - it was nearly a job for the guards. I had a receipt to show that i had paid my contractor for them. Heard of contractors not being able to produce certs for steel and concrete for farmers because they were unable to pay the suppliers. Don't know how farmers got the grant drawn down if they had no cert - I'm sure there were a lot of farmers with this issue - contractor paid, but contractor unable or unwilling to pay his supplier so no certs.
