If it's a new laptop it's probably just trying to catch up on older updates. I would just let it do it's thing for now. Updates are usually small so it is best to leave them on imo, that way it will do some small updates that you wont even notice from time to time instead of having to maually update after 6 months or so.

Thread moved from laptops to the windows forum.

If they are Windows automatic updates, the default setting is that only updates rated "important" or "critical" are downloaded and installed automatically.

You don't have to let them install, but it's a pretty good idea to do so if you're going to have that computer connected to the internet. If you had a car, and you noticed that the tires were getting old and the treads were a bit low, you could in theory keep going on them - but it's not a good idea to do so, because it puts up your chances of having a blowout. In a similar way, not keeping your computer up to date increases your chances of having something nasty happen - whether that's just a crash, or someone managing to infect you with some form of malware, or managing to take control of your computer, or even managing to steal enough information to get access to your online banking.
