I have an 06 Ford Focus C-Max 1.8 TDCI which needs a service.
The Ford dealer tells me it also needs a fuel filter and it was €75 for one of those bad boys!
My question (aside from "Are you for fcuking REAL!?") is, can't I get one cheaper from a motor factor or internet and install it myself?
    How hard can it be?
Once had a 1980's Escort Diesel and the fuel filter was a bit like the oil filter with a screw fixture, unscrew and screw new one in.
Does anyone have any experience or advice?
Also, was quoted €300 to do timing belt/chain combo, that actually sounds reasonable, anyone know?

    Edit
Just saw one online for €10. WTF?

yes, for a 4 year car out of warranty, you can do it yourself.
If the car was in warranty, you could still do it yourself.
And €75 is WAYYYYYYYYYY to expensive, search round on the net and locally, you'll get cheaper.
€300 for the TB work sound reasonable.

Did a fuel filter in a vag tdi - it was in the engine bay - doddle to change. Think the filter cost around 20 quid from the motor factors

Call a factor and see what price he can get you one.
Keep in mind some of those filters can be more expensive because they have pressure regulator valves etc.
A basic fuel filter will usually be around 20-30 euro top.

    75 is a joke.

    Agree 20 - 30 max.

TB quote is excellent in my opinion

Your gone a long way from the old escort diesel (loved those cars ) some of the modern diesel filters are expensive, some real rubbish cheap filters about from factors at mo,don't go for the cheapest could could cause you lot of hassle down rd.

Ring the stores of a ford dealer to get price of filter doubt its €75

Hmm... €75 does sound rather steep, which is unusual as Ford are usally very cheap for parts / servicing.

Yep, was looking at the same one.
Will get Ford to do belts and an oil and filter change.
I would do the oil myself but I just want the stamp in the service history in case I want to sell it in the near future.
Would they still stamp the book for a service if I tell them I'm doing filter myself? I know main dealers can get sniffy and obstinate if you're doing anything to get round their rip off service prices.

You think thats expensive for a Ford?

Try the 1.6 TDCI 110 Fuel filter! (Its a full capsule)

Ive heard €160 from Irish dealers!, NO JOKE:eek::eek:

Micksgarage has it at €55, I got it for €45 at local MF

Jesus, who do they think they are, Renault?

What symptoms/problems are likely if you don't change the fuel filter? How often would they be changed?

I have a 15 year old 1.4L VW engine, and I don't think the fuel filter has ever been changed.

Is that a petrol? If so, fuel filter, if any, will be cheap and easy to change if ever needed.
Diesel is somewhat cruder stuff and filtering is important and your car would probably cease to function if it got blocked.;)

Yep, petrol. I think the filter is underneath the car, in the middle, under the tank. Hard enough to get to without a bit of comfort room.

    Point taken about diesel.

I rang BMW looking for a fuel filter for a 10 year old 318ci yesterday and was told E50, rang rathgar motor factor and they only want E19.38! Last time I got one for a mondeo it was under E10!

Unfortunately the Focus can have one of two different filters. The delphi one is about €15 from your local Auto Distribution factor, however the Bosch one is harder to get. They are not interchangable.

Mine has the expensive one as luck would have it. My local dealer wanted 65, but had pity on me and did it for €50 even.

Don't crank the engine forever after changing it or you could damage the high pressure pump.

(And don't get a cheap spurious one!)

What engine do you have? Is it the 1.6d?
Rang a motorfactors in Limerick (Limerick Brakes) and they told me mine needed the cheaper one, they even asked for my reg to doublecheck.

Same as me, how do I know the difference?

The cheap one has 2 pipes on top and a weird locking thing and is made OEM by Delphi, the expensive one 3 pipes on top and is Bosch OEM.

People are getting mixed up here I think, this is for a 1.6 HDI and the 1.8 is a paper filter element like this Fuel_Filter_Element.jpg
The 1.8 diesel filter is cheap.

They are cheap its only paper your probably getting mixed up with the 1.6 hDI filter. http://www.fordpartsuk.com/shop/image.php?url=/images//focusmk2dieselservicekit1.8.jpg
This is the 1.6 filter, thats the expensive one!(on the right)

But I bought and changed one in my 1.8, and it was like this:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Genuine-Common-Rail-Diesel-Delphi-Fuel-Filter-HDF924-/280414039148?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4149faac6c

albeit badged as a Bosch, in a ford box and selling for €50 from a dealer!

There is a similar but different one for Ford diesels too (and presumably a different one again for the HDI!)

Nope- you are the one mixed up. Your photo is of an oil filter. This discussion is about fuel filters

Fuel filter for my 7 series is €38.50 from a northern dealer and they know how to charge! €75 is mad money!

Ah yeah then, thats the same filter used on the 1.8 transit connects, but the newer C-max 1.8 uses the paper one, forgot it got a face lift:o
