    1. Watchmen
    2. Donnie Darko
    3. Magnolia
    4. Southland Tales

I love these movies but could never recommend them to anybody I know because I think they are completely hit and miss . .

How about instead of another pointless list thread we name one film we enjoyed, why we enjoyed it and why we wouldnt recommend it to people.

Mine is Tenacious D and The Pick of Destiny...lets just say I enoyed it as I was in the correct state of mind for watching :) *ahem*

Having watched it again with a clear head I would never advise anyone watch it, truly awful save for a few fun musical numbers.

Do you mean films you enjoyed that nobody else did? Or movies you enjoyed, but others wouldn't be interested?

For me, it would probably be Man From Earth - great movie, but once people hear it's written by one of the Star Trek writers and stars some of the cast, they get turned off it right away.

The Man from Earth is something you can only mention to people and allow the idea to creep into their head. While I enjoyed that movie I would not recommend it to anyone on the basis they may attack me with a shovel looking for 90 odd minutes of their life back.

Random film I enjoyed but would not recommend...McGruber. All round fun romp but not a bit of substance to it.

Also I adore Freddy Got Fingered due to Tom Green's juvenile humour and that is the exact reason I will not recommend to people.

I personaly loved a film called 'Happiness'. It was one of the best american films of the 90's but I could never recommend it to anyone because it's horribly dark and depressing. Brilliant hilarious film though.

Ah ok, I'm curious about this one as its from the director of 'Welcome to the Dollhouse', which I suppose would fall into this category as its not so much a film you recommend to people as one you come across accidentally yourself and just get drawn into. I loved it.

A old black and white english film I saw a few years back I think it was called 'The Sandwich Board Man' about this man with one of those signs who just walked around london chatting

Was sort of thinking on the lines of a movie you watched but know that its a completely hit and miss movie . .

One you would watch and go "I really enjoyed that" but questioned whether or not you could recommend it, not because you doubted its enjoyability, but because you know others would hate . .

All four of these movies I didnt really enjoy thta much on first viewing. . But when I saw them several times I enjpyed them more with each watch . . They actually got better and better for me .

The four films I chose are ones which I myself could not really put into proper english why I enjoyed them or convince others why they should watch them. .

    1. Watchmen - Superhero film with only one real superhero who is not really the main superhero and a load of burnt out wannabes who are all flawed. .

    2. Donnie Darko - A movie about a kid who looks like hes just tripping the whole movie but has an uncanny superior intelligence

    3. Magnolia - Eh . . Peoples lives intertwine in some way . .

    4. Southland Tales - Weird story, weird dialougue, some sort of biblical refererance. .

I love these movies but could not sell them to friends or family. To be honest I wouldnt want to as I know they are quirky and not for everybody. . These are the movies I thought of . . Hope that helps . .

Oh and people can tell us why they wouldnt recommend films or why they liked them (doesnt just have to be a list)!

Having worked in a video store for two years, it is with great sadness and disgust that I give the following answer. The films I am least likely to recommend to people (i.e. the general public) are:
    • Anything that isn't in the English language.
Because apparently people don't get films to 'read'.

That's why I try to recommend films only to people that I know well enough to make a decent judgement on what they may enjoy.

I've seen stickers on the cases of some foreign language films in the video rental store nearest me which read:

    ***WARNING - SUBTITLES***

...as if opening the box will release some deadly virus or noxious gas!

Anyway, two films I've found it difficult to recommend to people are:

Factotum a deliberately strange film 'about' the dark and debauched life of Charles Bukowski. The lead performance from Matt Dillon is probably his best ever.

And, strangely, anyone I've ever recommended The Assassination Of Jesse James... to has found it way too long and really boring. Won't stop me recommending it, though; I mean, it's not a Tombstone-style western but I love it.

I also 'screen' certain films I haven't seen before so the slightly squeamish OH doesn't have to digest too much gore, horror and dark depravity! There are quite a lot of films on this 'not-recommended' list!

    factotum is brilliant

Secretary only because I actually did kinda recommend this (said it was quite good) to a mate who subsequently went out and bought it. Next time I met him he was not too happy with me since he had to sit through the whole thing with his rather old fashioned puritanical mother, ouch. Only plus side was at least I didn't mention Boogie Nights.

The Man Who Fell to Earth - I've always liked this film, but wouldn't recommend it to everyone. It is quite an acquired taste.

    Great film!

I watched it with my Mam when I was maybe 14/15. Quite akward at times but we both enjoyed it anyway.

I think most people would enjoy it, though I guess its a bit unusual...

Funny thing is: I don't think anyone but Bowie could have played that character. He was genuinely that weird (from coke addiction) at the time.

I dont think there are any films that i've enjoyed that i wouldnt reccomend to at least one person out there, it just depends on the person really. I know the people who will likely ask for my advice on a film, and therefore know their tastes.

lol! The whole anti-subtitled film thing does my head in, but then the lack of understanding around them doesnt help either.
"World Cinema" is an annoying title which covers everything from Ghibli to Takeshi Miike, making things confusing for the customer and sounding a little pretentious at the same time.

I caught The Wave on BBC4 last week, and very much enjoyed it, but the announcer made me angry after it by stating "If you enjoyed that, we have another foreign language film showing this week. Belleville Rendevouz is showing at 9pm on...."

So....if you appreciated the German film which deals with the issue of fascism in the modern world, then your sure to enjoy the dry humour and jazzy soundtrack of the animated French film, because its foreign!

a film I had heard of and wanted to see was "happy go lucky". bought it, watched it, and sat there for about 15 mins after wards going "did I like that?!?!?" and then decided I did like it because it was a totally strang film, but wouldnt recommend it to anyone.

The Original Gone in 60 Seconds (1974) and Session 9 are two of my favourite films but I reckon they are an aquired taste.

Always a bit wary of recommending Requiem for a Dream. I think its a great film but its so strange and depressing that I'd never tell anyone to watch it.

    Monster - with Charleze Theron

    Martyrs

It sits on a very precarious line where a person is going to either hug me afterwards for recommending it or slap/punch me in the face.

I just don't take the chance, even though it's one of my favorite films ever. I'd really need to know the person very well and what types of films they'd watched in the past.

Seconded.. a stunning film that I absolutely love.

But it's very difficult to watch (particularly the last 15 - 20 minutes) and even more difficult to recommend people.

Having said that, I don't think I could watch it a second time anytime soon.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch is one of these movies that I absolutely loved but find it hard to recommend. Once you tell people the plot
taken from IMDB: A transexual punk rock girl from East Berlin tours the US with her rock band as she tells her life story and follows the ex-boyfriend/bandmate who stole her songs
and the fact that it is pretty much Gay Cinema, people are totally put off. This is despite the fact it has incredible performances, amazing songs and such emotion and gives movies like Dreamgirls a run for it's money.

Totally digging Harold & Kumar Get the Munchies on tv right now, couldn't possibly recommend it though.:p

The Boondock Saints. I love this movie but I would only recommend it to people I know very well.

    Bubble Boy with Jake Gyllenhal.

I just found this movie hilarious. Hindu guy runs over cow. Blue from old school and his wife 'Poontang', the scene where Jake goes mud wrestling in the bubble.

Freddy Got Fingered. Tom Green's finest film (lol) where every line is a quote. I can still quote a lot of it now.

Tenacious D - Pick of Destiny. It depends whether you love Jack Black's love of metal/rock. I do, and it's awesome.

Attack Girls Swim Team vs the Undead (2007). Yep.

Death Tunnel aka "Chunnel" lol! Great idea, horrible execution. For that reason I liked it, but thought someone could make this a much better film. It's not a good film, mind you.

    Transformers 2
. Improved on every aspect of the original. You knew what it was going to be, shame on you if you hated the 1st but still saw the 2nd!!

    Mortal Kombat 1
(I'm a huge fan of MK)

    The Condemned
. Apparently everyone hated this 'remake' of Battle Royale. But I thought it was a decent action film.

12 Rounds. Seems that everyone wrote this film off before seeing it. Cena improved a lot as an actor as this is definitely as good as an average action film, which is saying a lot for a WWE film.

    the royal tenenbaums.

Its a great movie definitly, but you definitly have to be in the humour for a black comedy with this one. Gwyneth paltrow is really cool as a hot "emo" chick (kinda) and gene hackman is FUNNY! :D but as a usual Ben Stiller fan myself :o this isnt one of his best for funniness anyway imho
