iPod Touch Firmware Update

I'm trying to update the firmware (to OS 4.0) on my iPod Touch, but every time it tries to back up my apps it's freezing. I'm allowing iTunes through my firewall so that is not an issue. Has anyone else had this issue? Or can anyone explain why this is happening?
