Or dampers to give them their proper name.
Car in pictures is an Octavia but the Golf V, Seat Leon, Audi A3 etc would near identical.

I needed to replace the one on the right with the one on the left!

Step 1. jack up and support rear of car on proper axle stands. Make sure to leave the car "in gear" or in Park and ensure to chock the front wheels

Step 2:Wear glasses or goggles as this is a dirty bit, remove wheelarch liner. Job can probably be done without removing it but I found it easier with it out of the way.

This is held in with eight(8) screws dotted around the arch plus four(4)
    holding rear mudflap on

and two(2) underneath the front of little mudflap at front of rear arch.

Step 3: support bottom of suspension arm with a jack and remove damper by undoing 21mm bolt at bottom,

and remove two(2) 16mm bolts at top

The whole damper and top bracket assembly can now be removed from car.
TIP: run the bolts (21mm & 16mm) back into their respective holes a couple of turns, that way, you can't lose them.

Prise off black domed cap from top and undo 16mm bolt (you'll need a 16mm offset ring spanner) to remove bracket from top of damper. You will need to clamp flat bit on top of damper rod to prevent it turning(I used a vise grip). Once you break the initial bite on nut it'll come off with your fingers.

When you've done this, it's simply a matter of sliding off bracket and bump stop.

Simply refit in the reverse order and torque everything up to manufacturers specs. Then go pour yourself a beer for a job well done.

NOTE: I accept no responsibility for injury to anyone or damage to property and I assume you have reasonable skills before tackling this job.
