No Smoke - Oil additives for emissions failure

I drive a 97 Seat Ibiza 1L with 56k on the clock. It just failed the emissions test. In fact it was smoking so much they didn't even take a reading.

I know the car burns oil (those 1L polo engines of that vintage are famous for it) but HAS ANYONE USED THE NO SMOKE OIL ADDITIVES AND FOUND THEM TO WORK?

Dipetane has been known to work.

    +1 For Dipethane.
Had a Fiesta that failed a number of times on emissions and Dipethane got it through first time.

I've put the dipthane in the petrol but it's still very smokey - that's why I'm looking at oil additives now! Anyone ever try them?

if its still smokey after dipthane has been added perhaps there is a mechanical issue?

Did it run low on oil at some point? If it's smoking that bad it could be your piston rings.

I've had it for 7 years and it's always burned oil. I suspect it ran low before I had it and it's been getting worse since. I've only done 5k miles since last NCT which it passed! I had to change the Cat converter then though but it passed

Additives for oil or fuel tend to work (if indeed they really do work) for cars just above the fail point.

An issue as big as you describe would likely require mechanical work.

TBH if your car is smoking that bad you should get it looked at.

Might be worth throwing some Bardahl no smoke or similar in with a gallon of fresh oil and get the emissions tested at a local garage, depends how bad it is. That's the 2nd Ibiza 1.0 that the NCT folk wouldn't test as it was too smokey reported on boards recently. Other chap claimed his was burning no oil though.
