I`m looking to upgrade the RAM on my old Dell Inspiron 6400.
I`m not looking for something to mad just enough to get me buy without any hassle.
    I was thinking of this....

But I`d like peoples opinions as to what would be the best way to utilise it,
2x1GB`s, 2x2GB`s, 2x1GB`s, I`ve read that the 2 RAM`s are better if there the exact same to enable dual memory, I think.....
Corsair seem to be a very popular brand, any other suggestions?

2 x 1GB is the way to go.If you still have xp on that inspiron it wont be able to use the 4 gb.

I have a 6400, i am almost certain the max amount of RAM it can take is 2GB. And that's a hardware limitation.

I have Vista on it but plan on putting XP at some point, I read that 2GB is the max, so 2X1GB`s RAM would be the way to go then yeah?
    What you think about this....

    http://www.crucial.com/?cpe=pd_msn_us&ef_id=1705:10:6f322bb70bd79cef630de7673ea9198d_p_5284958_418462545:TFA2swqoEEQAAEm09OEAAMYO:20100728135459

Or similar will allow you to downlaod a small program that will identify the type of memory your computer has, how many slots, its max upgrade, memory speeds and best config.

In terms of RAM make all the big brands Corsair, Kingston, Crucial, OCZ should all be fine. You are not going to notice any differences between them unless prehaps you overclock. From my opinion generic RAm has served me well in the past, but maybe getting a brand will be more reassuring!

Dual sticks of same make and size (ie Dual channel) will give ~5% increase in benchmark tests, and negilable performance increase in real life!

EDIT: Explaining your ad above, CL5 is the latency...lower the better. Try aim for 4 here, although tbh its not going to have any majior impact of performance. The speed (667Mhz) will be determined by your cpu and if you buy 800Mhz for example it will be underclocked to 667Mhz.
