Clinking noise

I a have Ford Galaxy '99 and in the last week it's starting making a noise which sounds like a clink/chink on every wheel rotation except when the car is turning sharply to the right or left where it missed a beat. I tested it out in multistory car park yesterday. :D

Any ideas what it could be before I call out my mechanic. I've been having expensive nightmares all night. :(

    Thanks.

I think it sounds very much like a CV joint is gone.
The gatter has split allowing the grease to leak.
Check in at the back of the front wheel area for signs of grease splatter.
Not an expensive job to get done.

Sounds like the CV joint indeed, if you park the car with a full lock to one way on the steering (not good for the power steering pump so straighten the wheels when done) you should be able to see the CV joint without having to crawl in under ;)

Thanks for the pointers, I will take a look. Anything is expensive to me at the moment. :( Is it something that will wait till Child Benefit day or should I get it seen to in the interests of safety before that?

Get it sorted asap. You won't be able to see the joint itself if the boot is covering it but the problem could be caused by the boot splitting and the grease from around the joint getting out thus resulting in the clinking noise. Here's a good article on CV boots & joints:

if it is really a cv joint, then the problem is not the noise, when the noise stops then it will be a problem, since you most likely don´t go anyway anymore.

So you better sort out the problem op, when your car still moves.

I seen or more like heard cars with "clicking" cv joint being driven
round for a few weeks by there owners.
    (won't do it myself now)
But if its a case of having to drive you should be ok for a week or two.
Price on a job like this €140 cost me to get my Ford Focus done.
    Ring around a few garages.

The mechanic had a look at it this evening. It turns out it was nothing more than a dodgy hubcap which was only being held on by the ties rubbing against the wheel. Phew! He needs to replace a link and some bushes at the front but that's all. :D
