I was reading the system requirements for iPhone 4 on the apple website there, and it says for mac that mac os x version 10.5.8 or later is required....I have a PowerBook G4 running version 10.4.11, does this mean that there isn't any point in me joining the queues on Friday morning as I won't be able to set up iPhone 4 on my PowerBook?:confused::confused:

Doubt it, they just want you to have the latest OS because that's what they have tested compatibility with.

Just wondering if anybody can confirm this?

You do need the latest version, you will get a not compatible pop up with tiger. I had this problem when I bought my iphone4 without reading the fine print however, contrary to what the apple site says, you do not need the €149 snow leopard + ilife set. I picked up the €29 single user disc from compuB and it upgraded my OS with no problems. There are a lot of websites saying you need to do an erase & install to upgrade with this disc, I simply left it run as normal and had no issues with the install and all my data and preferences were saved. YMMV but the blurb on the apple site seems to be to con users into spending a lot more than they need to to upgrade from tiger. It's a pain in the arse doing it when the iphone still supports XP which is just as old as tiger.

FYI, using the €29 snow leopard disk to upgrade Tiger is going against the software licence of snow leopard.

Technically it works without a hitch, as you pointed out.

I don't think you'll be able to install Snow Leopard on a Powerbook G4, as there's no PPC support. It's Intel-only.

Hey, thanks for the reply and apologies for the delay in replying back!

I totally agree with you by the way...it's absolutely ridiculous that the iPhone4 is available on XP but not on Tiger

Just wondering if you're using a PowerBook G4 too?
In fairness to Apple, when I rang them originally about the issue they sent me out a free upgrade to Leopard which they said would be capable on the PowerBook as it had all the system requirements but in the end it didn't work as the disc is written on dual layer and the PowerBook is only capable of reading single layer. There's some long-winded way around it alright but it's so much hassle!
Do you know if that disc u bought in compuB is dual layer or single layer?

    Thanks in advance :D

This is one of the things I hate about Apple, I remember having to upgrade to Tiger from Panther to get a new iPod working, the same iPod worked with three generations of windows. They've know they've got OSX users locked in in abuse the position.

I don't think you should have to go all the way up to Snow Leopard (10.6.x)
The iPhone 4 should have compatibility with the latest upgrade of Leopard (10.5.x) Take a look on ebay, you may be able to get a Leopard intall DVD on there for reasonable money. A while back I got my hands on a Leopard upgrade DVD for £21.00. This is only meant to upgrade from Tiger, but with a little tweak during install you can do a clean install with this. [EDIT] It's actually USB compatibility that would be more of a problem with G4 machines. Unless it's near the end of the G4 line it's probably USB 1.1, the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 require USB 2.0.
