    whats the best type/least messy clay i can get for making small scupltures? i don't have access to a kiln so it will have to be self drying

    If you want to use clay, try Newclay as it air dries and hardens without the use of a kiln. That said in my opinion it doesn't lend itself to fine detail as it shrinks as it dries and fine details have a tendency to crack and or break off although you can reassemble with PVA.
    There are a few alternatives to clay out there - Fimo for example, similar to plasticine except can be fired in your oven at home.

    There are others such as Das and Formello, both air dry without firing.

    it kind of depends on your requirements, some will be better than others,of course you could also make your own
