screen problem

    hey guys,

I've an Acer laptop. I can turn it on and see the "Acer" start up screen, and get as far as the OS start-up logo, but then the screen goes completely black, it's as if the screen is turned off, not just a blank screen with nothing appearing. It's like as if the computer "forgets" to keep sending the signal to the screen.

could there be a loose cable?

    thanks,

    Des

hi, if you are seeing the acer logo / bios it sounds like the screen itself is ok and it could be an os issue - press F8 as it goes from logo to operating system splash screen and try safe mode or last known good config.. also try connecting to an external monitor if you want to rule out screen issue

Good idea on the external monitor, I've a spare one here I can use tomorrow, thanks, I'd never have thought of that tbh.

Oh, I think I know what the problem is. Tell me if this makes sense to you.

There is a thin, rubber piece of material just above the F-Keys. If I press this down and then release it, the screen flashes on for a second or two, then off again. Do some laptops have a kind of "senser" to tell the OS when the screen is closed, and to turn off the signal to the screen, because this seems to be what is happening, this piece of rubber material is in such a position that when the screen is closed, it would be pushed down, possibly creating a contact under it.

Of course, without trying the external monitor, I just don't know, but does that make sense at all?

yup all laptops have such a sensor - its basically a mechanical switch of sorts! how does this relate to problem of screen going blank at OS start up though? im not sure i follow..

Well, I think (think) that's co-incidence tbh, because if I leave the screen open, and manually simulate the screen closing then opening again, by pressing on this sensor with my finger, then release the sensor, as I said, the screen flashes on for a second or two.

The screen isn't actually going blank, I may have described that incorrectly, it's late, the screen is actually turning off.

It could very well be the lid close switch causing the problem. These are generally mechanical. It could be as simple as removing the plastic bezel around the keyboard and just loosening the switch or cleaning it out.

    What model is the Acer?

    Aspire 5610

Is it an easy job to take off the bezel? I do think it could do with a bit of a clean alright.

    Cheers.

Should be relativly straight forward. Best bet is to google "5610 service manual" and that should be all the help you need!

Thanks very much, I found a nice pdf with a step by step guide to disassembly and reassembly, I'll give it a bash tomorrow evening.

For the moment though, I have picture on a spare monitor and the other half is happy enough with that as a temp solution.

Thanks to everyone for your help, one of the reasons I think Boards is so great, a fantastic repository of knowledge, and people willing to help. Keep your fingers crossed for a successful operation tomorrow.

    :)

this could be the start to a slippery slope with something failing, if u bought it within the year i would suggest you buy an extended warrenty

could end up being lcd cable, invertor, or indeed the lcd itself
