Can you tell if someone smokes by their skin?

You know in some cases it's quite obvious through very bad skin . Have others noticed this?. (I'm not saying all cases and have smoked in the past myself so not pushing an anti-smoking agenda:cool:)

I've noticed that older - 30's onward - smokers tend to have those little wrinkles fanning out vertically on their lips, I suppose from pursing their lips when they take a drag. They look disgusting.

Also older smokers look wrinklier generally than non-smokers the same age.

I'm not sure about 'bad skin' when I think of bad skin I think spotty skin.. I think it maybe ages the skin a bit faster..

I find you really tell with older people in general from those little inverted lines around the mouth from that 'puckering' motion :o

Edit: Giselle beat me to it ;)

Its not just the wrinkles, I think smokers skin looks a different colour. Long time smokers develop a sort of grey pallor. Their skin generally looks dull.

Maybe it'll give you some extra motivation to quit, which would be great.:)

I think it definitely shows in the skin when someone is a smoker by the grey or yellowy dull tone to their skin. When watching TV it can be really obvious and some of the actors in soaps who don't smoke in their roles are definitely smokers.
Tanya from Eastenders is a prime example. Pretty girl but she looks way older than she actually is due to the condition of her skin. I think darker skins get away with it alot more.

  • Not always, but yeah, a lot of the time it's obvious because of the wrinkles around the mouth and the dull skin. It's not only older women either, I know girls in their early and mid twenties who already have loads of wrinkles and look 5-10 years older than their age.

It obviously isn't alway clear but there is some extreme cases where it's very clear. Not sure how to describe it. Was in Galway a few days ago and saw a girl puffing outside and her facial skin was horrendous.....another heavy smoking girl locally is the same......When I see that type of skin it's always obvious.

I'm a smoker and compared to people of my own age, I think my skin has aged well. But I do think genetics has a big part in that.

    Really? How old are they?

My younger sister is getting the cat's arse mouth. She started smoking when she was 14 and she's 30 now. I have a couple of small lines around my eyes, but she definitely has more lines than I do and it can only be down to the fags. I do think it is starting to catch up with her, but she still enjoys smoking too much to give up.

Hm, I guess they're only twenty one, but have been smoking for 5 years and regularly go to bed with their make-up on. I guess its good genes!
