is this a fcking country club or a fcking prison..what nonsense...and I would sometimes vote labour

two prisoners to a cell allows one prisoner trade information gathered from the other prisoner for an alteration of their senstence,

also two prisoners in a cell means one prisoner can raise alarm if one of these guests wanted to self harm

we need to store our criminals..stfu labour:pac:

"Labour party claims" is the problem there. Fianna Fail will make a counter claim and somewhere in the murky middle will be the truth.

is there anything the labour party can agree on? i doubt they'd agree with their own policies at this stage

No mention of Labour at all there, looks like the OP got the wrong end of the stick. It's only Dermot Ahern mentioning 'one prisoner, one cell', with Labour criticising the delay and overspend.

Put 50 in one cell and throw away the key... too much money is wasted on the scumbags in this society.

With all the fact finding missions the government have been on down through the years you'd think at least one of them would have been to China to try to find out how to run a prison system.

Doubt if the chinese would have let Larry Murphy out after 10 years!

It is too expensive to keep people in jail in this god forsaken country, it costs the taxpayer in the region of 90 thousand euros to keep one prisoner behind bars for 12 months. Thats why our streets are over run with thugs with 50 convictions and why you repeatedly hear of scandalously lenient prison sentences in the media.

Outsource them all to Nigerian prisons at a fraction of the cost. Clean up the streets and save a fortune which can be put to better use.

can we not outsource the prison system to India? win win , the prisoners can even have parttime jobs in a local call centres or give "English" lessons to call centre staff

A belief in gender identity involves a level of faith as there is nothing tangible to prove its existence which, as something divorced from the physical body, is similar to the idea of a soul. - Colette Colfer

Maybe if Students at the "University of Crime" prisoners have their own cells they would have fewer opportunities to exchange tips/information and establish networks thereby becoming less of a problem to society upon their release ?

They should have a choice of cell - gas, electric, or lethal injection. They'd only be in for a night.

One to a cell for those who prefer to be alone, two to a cell for those who prefer company.

Some guys go crazy on their own then self harm/attempt suicide, some go crazy being cooped up in a tiny space with someone else then commit assault or self harm.

Peaceful prisoners means less hassle for the prison guards to deal with.

It's ok everybody out here saying it should be like this or it the place is a holiday camp but the prison officers, social workers etc. are those who have to deal with the day to day reality of it.

Nor is this a new thing, a mixture of single/double cells is already the norm throughout the country.

You go to hospital and you don't get a single room unless you go private and even then it's not guaranteed. You have to pay for a bed on a ward. So I don't see the problem with two or more in a cell. In fact, if prisoners don't like it, then that's even more reason to have it.

Plenty of crimes are committed and no one is caught. When people are caught, plenty of them get off with it. If there is a conviction, lots of suspended sentences and community service. By the time someone ends up inside, it's long, long overdue and they can just take what they get. Prison as it stands now is only a deterrent for law abiding folk.
