iPod Touch or iPhone 4

Bearing in mind the pricing for iPhone 4 has been announced (around what I expected), I'm thinking of getting an iPod Touch or an iPhone.

I've currently got an N900 - and it's fantastic - the multitasking is unrivalled. There just isn't enough applications (albeit the apps that are out there are very useful) but browsing the app store on iTunes today I saw quite a few bits and pieces I'd like to have on a mobile device.

So, thinking about getting the iPhone to have all these bits and a phone together, or should I downgrade my N900 to a vanilla phone and carry the iPod Touch 32GB around with me, (upgraded to iOS 4..) to save a few bob.

Aside from telephone, camera and retina display - will I be losing out on much, or is it worth adding the extra €300 odd to get the iPhone? Multitasking looks a bit restrictive on iOS 4 however and that's a turn off.

Just in case this comes across as trolling, it certainly isn't and I've done my research on both.. Also worth noting this is the first time I've shown interest in an apple product, as they seem to be coming in line with Nokia handsets as far as hardware is concerned anyway. I do like the polish and the general look and feel of the iPhone/iPod though.

    Any advice appreciated.

No, I used it this week for the first time for about five minutes.. so it's a non-issue for me. MP3 player 99% of the time, the odd podcast then too. :D

    iPhone then - deffo.

Never saw the point of an iPod Touch for someone who also uses a phone, and would use internet on the fly.

Just stay away on Friday. :D

i had an iPod Touch for 2 years, great little device only for it made me want an iPhone even more.

i found i had my phone constantly with me and my Touch with me so it made sense to combine the 2!

This is what I was afraid of. :)

Ok, so this is basically what I'd be looking to get out of the iPhone:

MP3 player, Full Web Browsing, Email client, 3D gaming with some decent titles, social networking apps i.e. facebook, twitter, skype, windows live messenger. Bluetooth, wifi, 3G connectivity, good camera, good maps and navigation..and at least a days battery life.

I think I'd miss the hardware keys though. Are there free apps available to do most of the above? How about emulators? N900 currently has sega megadrive, nes, snes, gb, gba, c64, playstation, n64 and a pretty useless ds emu as far as i know.

Also, is lack of flash support an issue for anyone?

i get at least 2 days from my battery on my iPhone 4.
    general surfing, 3G enabled constantly.
wifi in stages throughout the day.
    push and fetch on etc

yes, they have bluetooth but not like your typical nokia phone, it cant connect to another phone and send pics or songs etc, will only connect to headsets, radios, car kits etc IIRC.

The Touch only exists for one reason, to make you want an iPhone even more :D

Once you own a Touch you will soon realise how cool it would be to be able to surf the web on the go and make phone calls with the device. You will then cave in and buy an iPhone.

My solution would be buy iPhone on a plan then go home and put the touch and the nokia on ebay. You will at least get the outlay of the iPhone back.

Was a nokia die-hard until I got my iPhone 18 months ago, now I look at them as dinosaurs, the iPhone takes a bit of getting used too but it's 100% worth it.

Thanks. I don't currently own a touch, so I've just got the N900 which should fetch about €300 or so. I prefer pay as you go, wouldn't fancy being tied into an 18 month contract. A 12 month with reasonably fair up front cost, monthly rate and good data allowance might sway me but I've a feeling I won't find that.

Ahh, lack of file transfer by bluetooth is a shame, it's not a showstopper for me however.

How's the touch keyboard, does it become second nature after a few weeks or does it always feel 'not right'?

I probably type faster on it now than I did on physical keys, I don't use short hand when texting I use the full word. The only thing about the physical keys is that you can text without looking at them, forget about texting while driving( which you shouldn't be doing anyway).

I'd completely forgotten about the Bluetooth file transfer goes to show how little I miss it and that wouldnhave been something I would have used a lot suppose that's what email is for.

    (Sorry about all the questions)

So how's the multitasking on it? I'm aware it's limited, can you listen to music & surf the web?

Very true, girlfriend got a touch a few months ago. On the back of the limited time I spent messing on that j went and bought an iPhone. Had a nokia 5800 as my main phone before that. Find the iPhone alot handier for most things. Wouldn't go back to the nokia as a full time phone.

You could always do this with the the iPhone v1. Multitasking on iOS4 means you can have non-native apps such as facebook open, then switch over to a text or call you want to make, maybe a skype call, or watch a video on youtube, download a song in itunes or an app in the app store, then flick back over to facebook and the same page you left open is still there for you. Previously, the app would close and restart everytime you swtiched from app to app.

3D gaming? I assume you mean in game 3D graphics as opposed to "Avatar" 3D effects... as far as I'm concerned the iPhone is the best mobile gaming device out there. You can't be sitting in a airport in a DS and download a game on the spot that tickles your fancy. The screen displays buttons etc for you to play even classic games such as Sonic etc. Remember the Nokia N-Gage? Apple basically did what Nokia could never do for mobile gaming, and probably by mistake, as they didn't market the iPhone for its games when it came out first. Oh the days of Snake on my 5110!

Ah that's what I'm looking for, just to be able to flick back and forth. I understand that a lot of apps won't be compatible with multitasking but as long as the basics work it's fine.

Yeah, 3D graphics. Funny thing, I actually thought of the N-Gage the other day when I was looking at an advert for gaming on the iPhone. I used to have the N-Gage actually and found the gaming experience good overall but lacking in multiplayer options as the device aged.

Well that all sounds very good. Thanks for all the help everyone!
