Rucksacks

Usually it means that the rucksack is zipped and can be expanded outwards. The numbers are litres carrying capacity. I don't have experience of rucksacks this size though, only the smaller day sacks.

Can also mean that the rucksack has a removable section (like a small bag or daysack) for when you want to leave the main bag in the tent and head off into a town or city. Looking at the links, it looks like it means it can be expanded as noted by Hmmm.

the second number is the liter number as in its capacity but the first set of digits i only looked at the first link its 65-85 i think it has something to do with the lenght of the straps. this bag is quite big so its good for somebody quite tall. the numbers i think are mesurements for your back the bag will fit 65cm to 85 cm. given that i for instance am 183 cm tthe bag would be comfortable at 65 but a person an 155 cm might have some dificulty. that is my belief on the numbers i may be wrong.

Hey, Snakedoc, this is wrong. Hmm and dogmatix have it right. In the case of the Appalachian 65:85, it means that it's expandable from 65 to 85 Litres, and for the Summit 65+15, it means that it's 65L with a removable 15L pack, which in the Summit's case is the lid, which becomes a belt pack.

The numbers are independant of back size, and any decent ruck will have an adjustable back for a wide range of heights.

No need to be sorry. There's no real standard for backpack sizing.
