    Hey,
I am attending an archeological fieldschool in Glendalough in August. I live in Meath so I would not be able to make it to the transport point in Dublin ontime and this is why I am thinking of camping nearby for the five nights. That way I can be onsite at 9am. Any suggestions for places to pitch a tent?

Camping isn't allowed anywhere in the Glendalough valley, since it's such a tourist attraction. It's rigourously enforced, too. The park rangers are constantly around and will kick you out if you set up camp. You can camp in the neighbouring valleys (with some exceptions and regulations), but they're a fair walk away.

There is both a hotel and hostel in Glendalough, which might suit you.

Camping is forbidden in the valley, although there were three tents up on Sunday morning 9am in prominent locations!!
If you're looking to stay for 5 days, why not check out the IMC Hut just up the road from Glendo - there is a track from the hut to the valley that will take you 30mins walk!!
€10 p/night... check out the Irish Mountaineering Club site.

you need to be a member to use the IMC hut don't you?

There are several B&B's in Laragh also OP.

You could also stay somewhere further from the valley and get the Kevin Bus down. Camping around Roundwood maybe, though not ideal.

    What is the Kevin bus?

Run from Dublin CC to Glendalough via N11, Bray, Kilmacanogue, Roundwood and Laragh.

Google St Kevin's bus for website

From the area myself, just wondering if any one knows what the limits of the "Glendalough Valley" are when it comes to camping? Been asked a few times and rangers give different answers.

when the mountains stop going up :D:D

But seriously though. Something like this I'd imagine

just a quick, rough throw together, there may be all sorts of actual differences

i was once told that to be safe from been kicked out from glendalough for camping there is three things to remember.
    1 no camp fires
2 out of sight of ANY trail
3 youy should have to walk about three hours from the visiter centre to get to it.
and surprisingly this was told to me by a park ranger on my last camping trip there i stop at the hut at the upper lake to drop an itinerary in so if i don't make it back to the car park on my due time the alarm is raised. nice blokes in there but they will kick you out they get a lot of crap up there too. your best bet is to camp somewhere outside the park boundries. will you be driving if so then go a short drive out of laragh and around by the approach to lug and campo ion there your ten minutes drive from glendalough then if not use a hostel less mess

Would Paddock Hill be regarded to be in the valley. We are doing the Wicklow Way and plan a night around there. I see there is a hut there on the map.

Paddock hill is not in the Glendalough valley. The hut there, if you're planning on staying there, is quite nice. It has a picnic table, fire ring and three sided shelter. It is not suitable for bad weather, as if the wind is blowing in the open side when raining, you will be miserable.

IIRC it's not a problem, you just pay more to use the hut. You can also camp in the garden too.

I have stayed there quite a few times and not a member, but always with another member so wasn't sure. Some epic parties to be had in that place :)

Yeah it's a tenner for non-members but you have to book in advance.

It's a short walk from the pub too. I've some great memories from the hut, makes me a bit homesick to talk about it now.

There's a group of us that would probably have a session there that night.

Doubt they'll give it to you if that's your reason for using it.

Back in the mid 1980's, there was a 'hermit' used to live around the back of the upper lake. He was there for several months - you'd meet him wandering down to Laragh for provisions. Does that count as camping! Mind you, that predated WMNP.

Pool 'ol St.Kevin would have a hard time, if he arrived now, wouldn't he?? Have to do the trick where you throw out all the moneylenders.. ;)
