Do bogs regrow? I'm getting conflicting information about this. Officially, it takes thousands of years for bogs to regrow. But I've heard from a number of different sources that bogs actually do regrow, and its the Bord na Mona's mechanised harvesting techniques that don't let them. Private bogs, where people wouldn't harvest much and they harvest in a manner that enhances growth, apparently re-grow. I have no idea which is true, just curious, does anyone know?

They do regrow, and this is done by layer of layer of dead vegetation building up on a yearly basis. A private bog, where people don't harvest much would regrow to about 12 foot deep of turf in 2000 years or so. Anyone that can prove different stands to make a mint.

What you are essentially talking about is active bog (bog that is actively forming).

Yes they can regrow depending on the current uses, restorative works and most importantly the water table.

It si a myth that privately cut bog land can regrow. To actively grow sufficient water needs to be present. The drainage needed to allow turf cutting doesn't allow for growth.

It is however possible that in a large area were turf cutting is confined to one small area that, growth of active bog may take place on the opposite end to the area being cut. This will depend on many variables though, drainage levels etc...

Bord na Mona or other individuals/companies using large scale heavy cutting machinery would of course cause proportionally more damage.
