    Hi all,

Out injuered for a few weeks so can't run so focusing on cycling and next year i hope to do a few triathlons. With that in mind i'm wondering what is a respectable time for 20KM in a sprint tri

I'm starting swimming lessons next week so i think that will be my really weak spot and i can do 5KM in about 24 min.

That might give an idea of fitness level !

As a relative beginner to the triathlon scene I'd be hoping to clock in and around 40 mins for the 20km.

In training I'd keep a pace of approx 2mins - 2.15 per km, and would hope that the race pace would see me step it up by a couple of notches.

Check out the 2010 Tri Athy split times for an indication http://www.triathy.ie/images/stories/SprintMens2010Final.xls

I wouldn't have too much of an idea but I'll be looking for about 45 minutes on Sunday, havn't done much on the bike in the last 2 weeks though.

Keep in mind that most races are not 20km, some are over and some are under... they are usually all advertised as 20km tho'

Times from one race to another will not translate.

+1, add to that wind and terrain and forget about translating times

maybe have a quick look and see if there's a sprint try near you, then take note of the
bike route and have a go.. that will give you an idea of your time and you can compare that to previous results

+2 very much depends on route and even cycling the route before is never the same as can be very different wind on the day and your effort levels will always be different in a race
for your first triathlon finishing is respectable and for your 2nd beating your first effort is respectable and so on forever!!!!

I did a route with some hills and wind in my face to get a basic reading over 20Km, i did it in 45 min so i'm trying to build from there. If i get it down to 40 min i'll be happy.
