Booked my driving test around 4 weeks ago for Churchtown so not sure when I will be assigned a date. When I rang to get the NCT done this morning they said there is not an appointment till the end of October. Can you do the driving test with the NCT booked but not passed, Im pretty sure you cant but wondering does anyone have any suggestions that would allow me to do my driving test in my own car

no. You need a current tax, insurance and NCT cert. It doesn't matter if it's booked, or if you have a letter from your insurance company saying the disc is in the post but you are insured - if you don't have the actual cert, it doesn't count.

    sorry.

Ye thats what i thought. Can you get an earlier date if it needs to be done for the test or do the waiting times differ in different NCT centres

I don't know tbh, but it's worth asking the NCT center if they can do anything or suggest an alternative.

If you booked that date with them for October, ring them back up and say "Excuse me but doesn't your policy state that if I have to wait more than four weeks for my NCT test then it is free" you'll more than likely be given an earlier date or asked would you take a cancelation at short notice. They have it in writing that if you have to wait more than 4 wks it's free so they always try get you in earlier then to make sure they get the 50 quid.

There was a big discussion about this in motors a few weeks ago with people maintaining you should be able to get a cancellation with a couple of days. Ring them regularly to check & dont limit yourself to one centre.

Just a suggestion, you could pay to use a driving instructor's car if you are really in a pickle.. One thing I would say is familiarise yourself with other's car if you are going to use it for the test (i.e. where all the buttons are etc)

+1 for this. Works like a charm :)
