Digital TV tuner in a PC. What does this mean..?

If a pc has a built in digital tv tuner, I'm assuming it means I can use it to watch tv.

However, will it pick up digital tv (eg freeview/Irish free tv whenever it is launched) or do I have to hook up an aerial to get RTE etc on it.

In other words, what could I receive on a pc with a digital tv tuner built in....?

There are several standards/types of digital tuners. As far as PC use goes the main ones used in Ireland are -

DVB-S/S2 tuners are used with a satellite input to receive digital satellite channels. DVB-S2 tuners are a newer version of DVB-S tuners and can receive both DVB-S and DVB-S2 signals, some TV channels (mainly HD ones) are on DVB-S2 signals. DVB-S tuners can not receive DVB-S2 signals. The Channels received depend on the Satellite your dish is pointed at. If you've got a Sky dish and receiver installed and you can run extra cables from it you can receive BBC, ITV, C4 etc - see www.freesat.co.uk for details.

DVB-T tuners are used with an aerial input to receive digital terrestrial TV like RTE on Saorview(Irish Freeview). Saorview is due to launch in October and then increase it's channels and HD line-up a year or two later. Currently there is a test/trial signal running on which you'll get RTE1&2 , TG4 and RTE News Now along with some other test card channels and radio channels.
