(Yes by plane, I know, before I get any smart arse answers!) :)

Anywho, I need to travel there in November for a day or two and using various flight search engines I don't know of any way other than going from Dubin-> (waiting for hours) stop in Amsterdam -> Colonge..

Any other suggestions or previous experiences?

I'll be near Cardiff at that time of the year but haven't found any thing from there or Bristol to get me there...

well if you go to the airports website it will show you all the flights. it's always the best option to check the airports website and then work backwards from there.

having done that on your behalf it shows your options are basically german wings from manchester, dublin or stansted, easy jet from gatwick or lufthansa from heathrow. they would all probably make more sense than going via amsterdam.

Also note that Düsseldorf airport is only 1 hour from Köln/Bonn airport by commuter train or 45 minutes by direct inter ctiy train. It might make sense to fly to Düsseldorf and then change airports.

I'd try to avoid stops on this short a journey.

    From Dublin

    Aer Lingus goes to Dusseldorf

    Germanwings to Bonn

I've always flown to Dusseldorf but I think the train journeys are even quicker than undo says: 20mins by ICE or 40 by regular train is what I remember. It's only 35kms.

The distance is larger than that. DUS is north of Düsseldorf city, CGN is south of Köln. The times I quoted were straight from bahn.de. I was surprised myself that it takes more than half an hour. But I guess it makes sense given the distance.

Dusseldorf airport to Cologne city centre is 35 minutes, I've done it many times. It's about another 15-20 minutes to Bonn from Cologne.

I always flew to Dusseldorf with Aer Lingus, just found their times suited me better.

I stand corrected. Though tit was quicker. It's been a while since my last visit and maybe I need a memory upgrade.

Royale with cheese is right. I lived both in Koln and Dusseldorf.
Fly to Dusseldorf airport train into Dusseldorf central station about 15/20 mins( dont get distracted by the Bann Damen :) )
Its 20 mins from Dusseldorf to Cologne central station, you can visit the famous Dom(Cathedral) right outside the station as well as get trams(Strasse bann) or a taxi to anywhere in the city.
Cologne is a great city, bars and clubs around the ring(Kolner ringe) go all night.
I never liked the old town (altstadt) much, the one in Dusseldorf is much bigger and a lot more fun.
If you have to go the Amsterdam route. Get a train from Schipol into Amsterdam central 15 mins(about €3.30) there are trains every hour to Cologne and it takes 2hours 15 mins. You might have enough time for some window shopping in Amsterdam while your there! The last time I took that train it was about €40 return to Dusseldorf you can pre book your seat and has a bar and restaurant aboard.
    Hope this helps
    Have a great time

Thanks for the replies everyone :)

Should have tried the airports website first do'h but thanks for looking into it!

Will go have a look into my new options now :)

I would like to get a chance to enjoy the city but, just heading there (if I can) for a day to a motorsport expo at the Koelnmesse in November then have to get back to uni without missing another day if possible..

    Cheers again people :D
