I have been searching in vain for a 2.8i Ghia or GL saloon 1979 / 1980 - series 1 Mk II. Not interested in the mk II face lifted version, or estates.

Not interested in Mk I Granada's either. :)

I saw an early MkII Granada estate a few weeks ago, it was parked beside a Jag MkII and more people were looking at the Granada than the Jag. Turns out it used to belong to an old teacher of mine.

I was looking for a Granada Mk III (Scorpio) for a daily driver a few months ago, couldn't find any even though they were one of the more popular exec cars of the 1980's. Same goes for other fords like the Orion and indeed the Sierra. I suppose the 2000 scrappage got most of them but I would have expected a lot more to survive. I ended out with an XR4i but even that was a UK import.

Theres a sweet looking MK II 2.8 Ghia estate for sale at the roadside at the Nine Mile Stone roundabout in Ashbourne. Its on UK plates. Looks very clean

Many have hit the track alright, but not as much in this country,Banger racing is more of an english thing. Having said that this mega rare '83KY reg Granada windsor estate (stretched in the middle) got raced in ireland a few years ago.

Also this rare Minster Limo was raced in 2001 aswell(rear doors stretched)

What happened to Granadas was the same as all big cars in this country, when they got old they were too expensive to run/repair/tax so they were dumped and something else bought. The pre facelift is the best looking of the MK2s alright, but given the choice i would go for a MK1 GXL myself,i always found the MK2 interior a bit bland, the MK1 is a far better looking car IMO.
This is a May 1978 Cork city reg'd 2.8 Ghia in Innishannon a few years back.

Shouldnt be too hard to pick up a 2.8 Ghia,id say nowadays they are more plentifull than the 2.0Ls though you might have better luck in england.

My own is due to hit 30 years old next week.

I was only commenting on how rare they have become in 2.8 Ghia form.

A silver car needing a few bits and pieces turned up for sale in Trim a few weeks ago and a pretty shabby white 2.8 Ghia was in Lusk last Sunday.
Both were for sale but I didnt inquire how much.

I've seen this car and heard it and I have to say it's something else, if I didn't have so much stuff myself i'd have it, it's got a Rover V8 fitted to it by a custom car builder and the interior has been re-trimmed to a very high standard, the conversion is first class and it sounds like an proper V8, the more I think about it the more I ask myself why didn't I buy it!!!!

My father worked for one of the old Ford garages in the late 70's / early 80's and was always supplied with a premium company car. Had Granada's for years, my favourite of which was a late MkII facelift model (louvered rear lights) black 2.8 Ghia auto with light brown leather interior. Would kill for that car today!

The best one that I have ever seen sold not too long ago at auction.
It was Sapphire blue with black vinyl, one owner and had 35k miles from new.
It made £9460 at auction including commission.

Cheap car if thats exactly what you want- you would never find a better one.

There's a black Granada Ghia under a house (as in parked!) out the old Mallow road not far from Blackpool, you can just about make out the back of it if you know the house. If i'm out that way i'll try and get a closer look and see if it's for sale. I think I remember someone telling me it might have been Jack Lynch's old state car but I can't confirm that.

    I don't think it is.
As far as I no somebody I know has it and its under restoration. Its definatley a state car and i think he said Jack Lynch's.

Maybe its just me,but i prefer to see poverty spec cars surviving in good order, something great bout a car surviving years when its worth peanuts most of the time.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 874 ✭✭✭Ali Babba

I hate poverty spec models, it would have to be a Ghia or top of the range, I just don't see why anyone would bother saving a bog standard model. And some of the colours!!! There seem to be a glut of beiges and vomit greens and browns, all very 70's I suppose.

Exactly, this is why i like to see boggo stuff lasting the battle. I like the top spec stuff too,but its just nice to see throwaway stuff still around.

should be easier to source bits for the bread and butter cars because there were more around

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 813 ✭✭✭Kevin_Herron

Unfortunetly for the pre-facelift Mk2 Granada's both the ordinary and high spec models suffered the same fate and is very hard to find either in excellent original condition.

Also there is not many people interested in restoring them.

There was a beautiful bronze 2.8 Ghia Mk II Countryman (estate) for sale last year for small money that I was extremely tempted to buy. It was an '84 facelift model which I prefer to the original Mk II. It was round about the time that the new NCT laws came in (i.e. 5 penalty points for no NCT) and it didn't have one so I let it go.

I know its an estate OP but it's worth a look:
