Hey all. I have a question.

I am software developer and I am currently in the US. I am planning to buy a few parts for my computer (hard drive, power supply and may be a motherboard) and bring them back to Ireland with me.

I will have these in my checked in luggage (not the bag I am taking on to the plane with me).

Do you think I will have any problems with these items? Can they be marked as dangerous or restricted or even seized?

For a start this would have nothing to do with US customs, it would be the customs at the port of arrival which you need to worry about. I wouldn't worry about Irish Customs if you are carrying some small pieces of hardware. I've brought back loads of hardware over the years and never been stopped. If you are stopped then they you may have to pay duty +vat on them.

The following information is predicated on the items being imported for personal use. Different rules apply to businesses.

You are entitled to bring goods from outside the EU into Ireland up to a value of €22 without incurring a VAT charge. If you import an item with a value in excess of €22 you are liable to pay VAT at the rate chargeable in Ireland on similar items to those imported. On computer hardware that would be 21%.

If you bring a purchase worth more than €150 you must also pay import duty on top of VAT. Import Duty rates are set by the EU and depend on the product being imported. It ranges from 0% to in excess of 20%. You would have to look up the duties yourseld on the EU TARIC page. I wouldn't think for computer hardware that it is any more than 3% though.

That is the legal situation in respect of one's legal liability for importing goods for personal use. Whether one tries to shirk these rules through non declaration is an entirely different matter and not one appropriate for discussion here really.

I'd like to buy some computers parts in USA internet shop and send them to Ireland. How much duty and vat shall I pay if those parts are for personal use only. Value of the parcel will be about 100 euro.

    Thanks

If ordering electronics from the USA, select United States Postal Service as the shipping option. I have used this many times and have never been charged VAT or duty. If you ship with fedex or DHL etc you will definitely have to pay.

ALSO - I brought back a dvd player from the usa years ago. I was happy to pay the duty etc and I approached the RED - items to declare - exit in Dublin Airport. I told the officer that it was worth $250 and I would like to pay the duty. He smiled and said in true Irish style... "ah go on, you're grand don't worry about it", he then wished me a merry christmas. What a nice chap.

    my experiences anyway...
