    Hi All,

Im relocating to Dublin to work in st james hospital. I have a friend who has a room in terenure in rathmines. Would this be an OK commute. Are there any buses to heuston from it? Or is it a bad commute each morning/evening? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am not from the area.

No buses directly, but from Terenure the 17 will bring you to Rialto, a 10 minute walk from St James' Hospital. The bus stops on Rathfarnham Road just before Terenure Cross heading towards town, and on Terenure Road West just beyond Rathdown Motors. Click on the google maps button on the link below to see the bus stops and route.

Times for the 17 are at:
    http://www.dublinbus.ie/en/Your-Journey1/Timetables/All-Timetables/New-Route-17/

Take the times at Churchtown Road and add 5 minutes for an approximate time at Terenure (give or take 5-10 minutes).

Otherwise from Terenure take the 15, 15a, 15b, 74, or 74a to Suffolk Street or 15e, 15f, 65 or 65b to Dame Street and 123 from Dame Street to St James' Hospital.

this is where the new route information system will be of particualr relevance.
when will it come in on the 17 route
BTW this system if marketted could do a lot for evening weekend bus traffic at the expense of taxis

Cycling would probably be the easiest option it's less than 4km.

this is a twenty minute cycle down sundrive road - a mild hill on the way home with the cycle to work scheme it makes a lot of sense

The system has still to go through the trial period as the buses are still being kitted out with the requisite equipment.

I would say we should see some rollout later this year and into 2011. The first on-street indicator is now installed on the Howth Road but I'm not sure if it is "live" yet.

I'm currently going to Rathmines -> Parkgate St and while it's not so bad that the moment (49/54a to Lord Edward St, then some Heuston direction bus from the quays) or 16a/19a to Westmoreland St and 25/66 on ). At the moment it's 25-30 minutes. In school time, the second option is a total non-runner and the first can take over an hour. The changes for you to get the 123 instead of the second bus wouldn't significantly reduce that time.

Assuming walking/cycling is not an option, best route is probably the 19 as suggested above. If you don't want to walk, a 16/49/19a/54a to Leonards Corner and 19 from there is probably easiest.
