was looking on our agfood account last month and noticed that the majority of our weanlings have been rejected for the reason that they were dehorned over the age of 3 weeks of age... which they were. i phoned them on the lo call number about 3 weeks back and the lady i was talking to said that all i had to do was send in proof of purchase of anestetic purchased before the date of dehorning which we did. checking the account again last week and its still marked R!! tried ringing them again and just keep getting answer machine on which i left 2 messages already without recieving a reply. to say i'm annoyed is an under statement. granted most of the calves were over 3 weeks when dehorned but we were under the impression they were not strong enough to be dehorned. (we were thought in warrenstown ag college to dehorn the calf when strong enough:/)However as soon as we completed the suckler welfare course where it was actually pointed out to us how small the horns could be for dehorning more than 90% of our calves have been dehorned b4 the 3 week mark. sorry about the long post but just wondering is there anyone out there with similar experiences.

I agree totally with you, very few calves are strong enough to dehorn within 2 weeks of age. If you sent them the receipt for the anestetic then you should have no problem at all - I know it takes them an age to update your status online. I have always used anesthetic when dehorning calves no matter what age, but to save hassle I always mark my calves as being dehorned before 2 weeks old for the SCWS.

we didn't enter suckler welfare scheme for this reason. Too much buraucreacy, time, meal and paperwork for wha...., hassle? No thanks:rolleyes:

If you've sent in all the relevant paperwork and receipts, I can't see what they're problem is though. Typical here you are carrying out things to the letter of the law and you've problems.

Many's the lad is probably doctoring dates not to mention receipts to beat the band and getting away with it:mad:

I always fill in the de-horning at before 2 weeks, otherwise as stated, they will look for an anesthetic receipt.

As for not joining the scheme, can you afford not to?
€40 per head......come on, you can fill the data in on-line now, no hassle.

I agree, 50 cows @ €40 per cow is €2000 and takes less than 30 minutes online in total. You cannot make money as easy any other way. And the measures that you do for it are good for your farm and your animals and are things that you should be doing anyway whether you are receiving payment or not.
