Switching doctor on medical card

I want to change doctors, and I'm on a medical card. I'm going to make an appointment with doctor I want to change to, and pay for that, to make sure I'm happy with her before I switch over my medical card. But once I decide on this, what do I do to switch? Do I contact my local HSE office and ask for a new card or do I do it through the doctors office?

Interesting, I think GP's get an annual fee per medical card patient. Not sure how it would work changing, as two GP's can presumably not get the fee for just one patient. Also, are you certain the new GP has a medical card contract. Aside from that, the old adage "Beggars can't be choosers" comes to mind here also.

If you are happy with your new choice, and vice versa, you should ask him/her would they accept you on a medical card. If yes, contact the Local HSE office and request a Change of Doctor form. That will be sent to you and you will have to get the new GP to sign & stamp. You should then send it back to the HSE. Usually the wait is about 3 wks

Firstly, make sure he is a medical card doctor and that he has room for you on that list. Then to change doctors just obtain a 'Medical card change of doctor form' from your local health centre or print an online one from the HSE site, and get the doctor to sign it, then post it to Client Registration Unit, PO Box 11745, Finglas, Dublin 11. Or Ph: 1890 252 919 to check for more info.

    Charming.

My previous doctor misdiagnosed a lung-infection and, irony of ironies, it initiated a string of respiratory problems that left me on the dole (but unable to claim sick benefit)!

OP, change your doctor. "Beggars" most certainly can be choosers when it comes to looking after their health.
