I'm a 17 year old who has tried to get a summer job, since the start of June and have gotten nowhere.
I could have a full time job starting september but hold on, I have school you ****ing moron. So obviously I can't work for you.

Where do I go from here? People are being let off nonstop, college graduates can't get jobs so what am I supposed to do? I can't get a job anywhere!

My mother recently has been let off so I get hardly any money from her, my dad (parents divorced) normally gives me money but I hate asking him for money, every time I see him! & on top of that, most of my mates, including my girlfriend has a job. I'm broke and sick of it. :(

I have one but 9/10 they say no, and if they would like their grass cut, the travelers normally do it.

Nice attitide, I'm surprised someone with your social skills hasn't been snapped up...

That's the wrong approach straight away.

It's very difficult for anybody to find a job, including myself. As a college student, I know it's disappointing to be rejected job after job, or even be offered a full-time job.

So, if you have a lawn mower, take advantage of it. If you don't want to push it along with you, then call into houses, ask if they want their grass cut, and take down their address if they do. Tell them you will return in about an hour. (It did work for me at least, about 3 years ago when I was 15).
And even if you get very few customers, if any, then don't just sulk and give up. You have to get up and just plan another day, perhaps trying a different area. As you say, 9/10 say no, but 1/10 say yes!
Even if you make €20 for the whole day, you're still learning the true meaning of work, which will give you experience money can not buy.

    I'm sorry.

I'm not a little sulking brat with a bad attitude, honestly. I'm a nice guy.
I'm not lazy, I'm not waiting for an opportunity to land on my lap, I'm trying.

I don't have any real serious responsibilities, I respect the fact that my need for a job is far less then the need of a person over the age of 18. I do know that people have it a lot worse then me.

I'm quite embarrassed of my OP, I apologize.

Believe me, I used to wash cars and everything when I was 15 but around my estate, we have our own little recession now.

People don't pay you to wash their cars or to cut their grass. They simply buy themselves a lawn mower (saving them money in the long run) or they go to a car wash and get a far better quality service. The rising cost of petrol makes it impossible to make a profit.

That was uncalled for. Job hunting is a bitch at the best of times.

OP, do you like animals? There's lots of people working full-time who would pay you to come and walk their dogs during the day. There's also a lot of people going on holidays who would much rather have someone to come over and feed/exercise their animals instead of leaving them in a kennel.

Your need for Money and independence and autonomy is just as vaild as that of an eighteen+ year old.

Hang on in There Young Man
Maybe just get your cv together, make sure it's perfect. Sit down at your pc, apply apply apply apply, send out application after application, and then make sure you are contactable and ready.

Are you any good at crafting ? There is money to be made in hand made cards,
I know that seems a daft thing to say to a young man,
I have 3 kids at college one makes extra cash face painting , one makes hand made greeting cards, she flogs them off to her friends, family and her college mates, The funny part is they help her to make them boys and all lol.
Keep your chin up its not the end of the world, Things will work out.

No, calling someone who offered him a job a "****king moron" was uncalled for..

I pointed this out, and the OP himself was mature enough to agree and realise this, as per his subsequent post "I'm quite embarrassed of my OP, I apologize. "

But back to the OP... as your time for work is limited, you need to either find employers who have rota based work so you can take Saturday/Sunday/Evening slots (supermarkets, hotels, bars etc.), or take jobs which people may want done, but there are not many people doing them (lawn mowing (as suggested), window washing etc)..

Do you live in a rural or city? If you live on an estate then pop around to the other houses and let them know you are willing to wash windows etc, and see if they are interested..

    DO NOT CONTACT THESE PEOPLE

Don't waste your time OP. You will more than likely come out of this job having earned absolutely no money. They pay no basic wage. I's commission only. They can afford to hire anyone because the worst case scenario is they pay you nothing anyway. People I know have been taken advantage of by these people before.

No offence Anthony Byrne. This is the kind of work that suits a very particular type of person. Obviously you managed to do well for yourself and I respect that.

+1, dead right. Comission only requires someone whose sole purpose in life is to be able to sell rice to the proverbial Chinese. Anything less and you'll run a mile as I did. In my experience, worked 200+ hours for €256 and as soon as I saw the total, ran like the the bloody wind to a proper job.

Just came across this and was concerned, as I am about so many people I know, including myself, who are unemployed. Another suggestion, if there are any bungalows near you, how about window cleaning? Cheap business to run, weekends only, I wouldn't advocate hopping up a ladder without insurance, but bungalows are a safer bet. You are 17 years old, no mortgage, and (presumably) no family to support, give it a go, maybe with a relative, or friend, with a twinkle in your eye, a smile on your lips, and a cheery hello, endear yourself to your customers. NEVER enter the houses for toilet visit or drinks of water. Find elsewhere for that. If I were younger I'd do it. These days we need to think our way out of the mess. I wish you the very best of luck.

The cutting grass thing used to work for me in the west dublin area, used to make a killing. Try going to new-ish estates (if u can find any in this day and age)as opposed to old established ones. These people tend to be younger and not as garden- proud as older folk so often don't own mowers. If you have access to a car better still.
You also may get invited inside for a ' glass of water' from the odd bored house-wife ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,108 ✭✭✭Jellybaby1

Lol! I wasn't even thinking along those lines filthymcnasty! I knew a window cleaner years ago who asked for drinks of water, and he had the gift of the gab and it could be half an hour later when he finished the drink and returned to the windows. The OP should ignore naughty suggestions! Lol!

OP go for it with mowing lawns - if people are saying they've already got someone doing it, smile and ask them how much they pay, then undercut your competition, and make sure you've a grass-box or some other means of clearing up the mess. i used to do this when i was a kid, and my two brothers and i made a fcuking fortune. +1 on the newer estates idea - i'm in blackrock in dublin and i'd love someone to cut the jungle of a garden i have since i've neither the time nor the equipment to do it. and the D4 kids never seem to do this for some reason so there's a major niche market i reckon!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,108 ✭✭✭Jellybaby1

Maybe the D4 kids don't need the dosh! Perfect scenario for a lad wanting to make a few quid! Up and at 'em lad!!

Try the animal shelters, and then if you're very good at a particular subject in school offer cut price grinds for JC students. Its what I meant to do for maths and science through TY but I forgot. Most grinds are like 30 an hours, but you could do it for like 15-20. Its not much, but if you get 2 or 3 regulars thats 40-60 euro a week for only a few hours of work.

Babysitting? Do your parents have friends with youngish kids? I know the money isn't great but it's something!

The window cleaning idea is good. You could give it a try.

But keep asking around anyway, you might eventually have some luck.

I know how you feel its tough. When I was a teenager the only jobs I could ever get was out on farms picking fruit etc. It was piecework so sometimes I only got about 1 pound an hour for the work. It was cash though and I got quite friendly with the farmers who owned the farm and kept in touch for years.

Seankev, you've a lot of ideas here. Hope you find something that helps. Just this week I've had qualified tradesmen knocking on my door looking for work. Its just the way things are and there are lots of people like yourself too.

I also have been getting a lot of leaflet drops in the door, and I won't be putting 'no junk mail' on my door as I believe the delivery people are just trying to earn a few bob and I feel I should let them deliver the junk mail, they have to finish the pile of leaflets to finish the job. I know the stuff is just more rubbish to get rid of but we have to support each other these days.
