I read a book a few years ago and have lost it. Can someone remember the name based on this summary:

Scientists observing a planet where gravity is significantly greater that earths. The story reads like an accelerated evolution cycle of mankind where the lifeforms on the planet start out as primitives and end up with a space travel capable civilisation and actually rescue the scientists from a disaster.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

Except for your description of the ending, it sounds very similar to the Helliconia trilogy (Spring, Summer & Winter) by Brian Aldiss.

Had a brainwave last night and it's Dragon's Egg by Robert Forward. Yeah!

It's probably Mission of Gravity by Hal Clement. The aliens were shaped like caterpillars, and the humans were trying to bootstrap their culture so help the humans escape the intense gravity
