having a second look at a 04 Saab 9-3, my mechanic is coming along to check it out. Any idea how much I should pay him? or he should charge me? he's a family friend.

    cheers

It really depends on how long it takes him to travel there, examine the car, and travel back. I'd agree a price before engaging him.

travel time would be 15 mins, checking car should take 15 mins. he has the same car so is familiar with the setup.

ball park figure? was thinkin 50euro, 100euro max?

15 minutes isn't very long to look at the car. I would say an hour really to be thorough. Suppose it depends on what you're checking. When a mate of mine checks cars for me, he'll look at all the panels and joins for signs of damage and repair. Same for the underside. Check the engine obviously, drive it, check the interior to see if everything works. Even looks under carpets for hidden work.

Ask him how much before hand really.

Hope it's ok, I've a similar situation. Probably travelling Dublin-Waterford next weekend to view a used car there, and need a mechanic to advise me on it.

Anyone in Cork that can be recommended? And also how much should it cost roughly?

Agree a figure before hand , if his a family friend he won't fleece you.

Is it easy to get an indy mechanic to do this for a reasonable price? Also I read on here elsewhere it's better to have someone who is familiar with the particular car look at it, than a mechanic who may miss specific problems, but I don't know how true this is.
