I had a couple of fillings done with my 'regular' dentist about 6 weeks ago, one of which was quite deep and she told me to expect sensitivity. I would sometimes suffer with sensitive teeth anyhow but about 3 weeks ago I had the worst tooth ache / sensitivity ever. I rang the dentist (it was a friday mornin) and couldn't get to see my dentist til Tuesday. The pain subsided over the weekend but was still a little sensitive when I went on the Tuesday. She had a look, couldn't see anything wrong with it, carried out a few 'sensitive' tests on the teeth that were filled which she said would normally have people lepping out of the chair but it was only minor to me. So we came to the conclusion that it was just a bit sensitivity from the deep filling. She did say if the pain was throbbing, which it was a bit on the thursday / friday when i initially had the pain, i could need root canal treatment. Last night I had the worst tooth ache again - I got up in the middle of the night and rubbed some of that colgate sensitive toothpaste on it, didn't have any effect, took some pain killers and they took a good while to kick in. This morning I couldn't chew my breakfast on one side cos it hurts so much when i 'clamp' my teeth together.
I just find it bizarre that I wouldn't normally have much problems or cavaties with my teeth and since I've had those last fillings done I've had nothing but trouble and now in a lot of pain. Should I go back to her again or do you think I should seek a 2nd opinion to see if there was some 'botched' up work done??

Can anyone offer their tuppence worth? I'm in a good bit of pain at the moment and need to do something soon!
    Thanks!!

go back to her. she is familiar with the tooth. it was a deep filling as you say and very often these are borderline situations where the filling might work or more extensive treatment (root canal) is necessary.

once it keeps you awake at night you are past the point of no return. Root Canal ...:D

to be honest, she would've only cleaned out the decay that was there. if it's close to the nerve then this is a consequence, but it's not botched.

And a tip for if you need more pain relief in the middle of the night... either take a soluble version of your chosen painkiller or if you are taking capsules, have a hot drink with them. That disolves them more quickly so they get into the system more quickly too.

Hope you get sorted soon! :)

    Hi guys,
    Thanks for your responses.
I've been to my own dentist this morning and looks like I'm gonna need some root canal treatment and a crown. The pain isn't as bad today but I know it will come back again so I'm getting the filling removed and something done to the root tomorrow which will give me 3/4 weeks pain free :-)
My own dentist doesn't do root canal treatment but has referred me else where and said the root canal treatment would cost around €700 and €800 for a crown - I need to start saving!
I'm seriously thinking of going up north to get this done, as I don't (like most people I'm sure) have this money lying around and I believe it is much cheaper up there. Any pros or cons, opinions on this?

    Pros - Cheaper

Cons - if anything is niggling or goes a bit wrong it's a right pain in the behind getting yourself up there to have things checked.
