Any way around blocked IMGUR.com on O2

    Hi all,

I am sick because O2 have decided in their wisdom to block IMGUR.com.
Anyone who uses digg.com or reddit.com will know that almost all of their images are hosted there. It means I the apps are totally useless etc as no links with images can be viewed. lame.
Imgur is a legit site that is actively moderated for illegal content, so no idea why O2 have blanket blocked it. Surely they should block picasa twitpic etc and any other site that allows uploading of media if thats the case?

anyway, is there any way to adjust the APN settings so I can access this blocked site? cheers...

Complain to them, its the only way they will listen.

    Failing that, move to Vodafone.

yeah I think a move is the only option. being greeted with a wall of silence when arguing that imgur.com is a legitimate site with a robust terms of service and policies for actively removing any illegal/copyrighted or porn images uploaded.

It's not the browser Jw, its the service. site is blocked using any broswer, or any app that connects to the mobile internet.

I would consider a move to voda but I heard they are in talks with the Govt. to do similar on a voluntary basis.

found this about O2s decision http://www.digitalrights.ie/2010/07/14/blocking-of-innocent-websites-by-o2-ireland/

Opera Mini uses their own proxy, and should work fine.

yeah its available for prepay!!! unreal? I think its because you are not in a "contract" they cannot deny you service. but if your billpay (like I am) its blocked? how the hell is that 'child protection'. sure children are more likley on prepay sims not billpay.

I pointed out to O2 its available on prepay, so why not billpay. no answer back yet. they are onto the tech team and business owners to review the decision I think. Im hoping they unblock it for billpay.

by the way, it may appear the site works until you try and load an image on it... for example try this http://i.imgur.com/YuKcn.jpg
doesn't work for me, but is fine over wifi, or on Meteor.

what!? you can actually see that link I just posted in the last post? on your phone via O2 mobile internet?
yeah I am on reddit all the time too, and thats my big problem. It's useless without imgur. I cannot see any of the images on reddit and I am O2 bill pay.
you mind helping me out and letting me know your APN settings.

My APN is 'internet' and the proxy is 62.40.32.40

Opera should do the trick for you, it'll fetch images and pages through the opera proxy, although they'll be of a slighly lower quality. I had to go to a page blocked by eircom awhile ago, fired up Opera and no problem. It's crappy having to use a different browser to view anything though. I like opera on the desktop but hate it on phones.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,287 ✭✭✭100gSoma

thanks for that advice Mantel. Although I hate Opera on the phone myself too and would prefer to use the built in browser. Also, when using the reddit app on my android phone it pulls in the images direct and cannot do this.
I'll wait for Dermos settings and hopefully that will do the trick.

OP, I also can see the picture you linked. O2 Clear sim billpay on a HTC Desire. APN settings:
    APN: wap.dol.ie
    Proxy: 62.40.32.40
    Port: 8080
    Server: www.o2.ie
    Authentication type: not set
(automatic settings pulled from sim card at initial setup)

thanks Beci. My settings are identical except for the APN section.

My APN says internet. I will change it to wap.dol.ie and see what happens. Although I might be charged for the internet then maybe. I have an unlimited data package but the APN must be internet I think. Will check and update.

    thanks alot for the settings

That's just the name, it's not a setting as such.

I think alternative apns will work fine, even third party open apns. Have to double check it though, been awhile since I looked it up last.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 280 ✭✭BeciMester

Oh yeah, I forgot: I have the 250MB data add-on, my data is not part of my subscription. That may make a difference.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,287 ✭✭✭100gSoma

Ok, I set the APN as wap.dol.ie and left everything else the same. It didn't work.
Then I just reset my phone mobile network settings by mistake. blanked them totally. no proxy filled in, no port filled in, nothing. except APN set as internet. and...... it works.

Dunno what to make of that. will leave it as it is. pictures from imgur are working in my reddit app now. thanks for the replies all.

for cellular data I only have the APN set as "internet" everything else is blank.
that is the official o2 setting

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,236 ✭✭✭Idleater

I have the APN named as O2.ie Internet, I'm on the 250mb add on to Simplicity and sure enough, the link posted doesn't work.

    Ah.

Maybe the thread should not be called ''Any way around blocked IMGUR.com on O2'' then.

    ;)

As 100gSoma said, it was a settings issue:

I visit links on imgur every day and have never been blocked. Can you tell me any sites that are blocked? because through my iphone or when I had o2 broadband I have never been blocked from any sites.

In this instance for 100gSoma it was a settings issue however, back on July 2nd (and before), 02 had blocked access to the site which I experienced myself and they state they continue to block other sites but obviously they arent going to tell us which ones.

You can read more about it in the following threads:

Ah, none of those posts happen to be on sections of forums I check regularly but I still have no idea how I wasn't affected though.
do you know if there are any sites blocked at the moment?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,780 ✭✭✭JohnK

Afraid not, they never publish their block list so the only way to know is if you suddenly lose access to a site you've previously been able to access or someone tells you about it.

As to the number of sites currently being blocked, I seem to remember hearing that the IWF usually have a few hundred sites in their lists but I have no links to back that up.

As 100gSoma said, it was a settings issue:

That is true, but I believe that it is priced differently - certainly for iPhone/postpay users.

The issue affects the internet APN not the prepay or blackberry apn.
