You plug your iPhone into your computer and start up iTunes. Should be able to figure it out from there ;)

Personally, ios4 works great for me on the 3GS. It's zippy and the multitasking is great. Make sure you look at the ios4 tutorials on the apple website to get the full use out of it!

It's free and generally (especially with the 3GS) makes things run smoother. Multitasking, folders, backgrounds on home screen - what's there to lose?! *

*Some ppl have had problems but i'm pretty sure its the minority.

I would say make sure you have everything backed up and you have ability to go back if you are not happy with upgrade.

Problems are numerous for people who have them, look at the boards posts. After reading here and other forums about all the problems and hassle I’ve chosen not to upgraded to OS4 so I can’t tell you from my personal experience.

I upgraded a 3GS to IOS 4.01 the other evening and now it has issues picking up wifi..It won't seem to connect to the wifi hotspots I normally go to anymore. After reading on the apple forum it seems alot of people are having ths same issue as myself. I regret updating it now, now it's using up my data allowance since I can't connect to wifi 80% of the time. I'd hold off for the moment until an updated version is released. Obviously a few bugs in it.

People who have bad experiences make their voices heard. I'm sure if everyone who had a smooth hassle free upgrade came on here and ranted about how happy they were, it would be a better poll.

as long as you have everything completely backed up go for it !

i only had about 70% of my music and 50% of my apps backed up so when my phone went into restore* it was a pain in the ass, but finding the update great!

*i dont think everyones phone does that, i was prob just unlucky.
but if it does happen it takes a while!

Please please please could somebody help me. My iphone 3g has turned into a brick since updating to IOS 4. By brick I mean:

-5 mins + to open messages
    - safari sticking - currently stuck on bookmarks for the past two hours - I have tried crashing it, switcing it on / off, just leaving the screen up and nothing has cleared it - this is on a wifi connection
    - Got a call the other day, went to answer it, silence, then black screen and apple logo
    - regular black screen crashing.

I want to wipe it and do a full restore but I need to back up all my photos etc. and I don't know how. Could someone please give me some directions on this.

At this stage really what I want to do is send the whole thing kit an kaboodle back to Steve Jobs.

    Any help really appreciated

Go to the apple support site to look up the basics; backing up etc. When you have photos etc off it, restore AS A NEW PHONE, not from a backup. Thi seems to be the way of getting the 3G to run iOS4 properly.
