Hi, Just a quick one. I am in receipt of the one parent family tax credit. I pay 400 a month maintenance for my child and have done for over 3 years. Would I be able to claim tax relief on that payment? I have never done so its just a firend believes I should have some relief??

EDIT: It wont allow me edit the typo in the subject :-(

    Hi

Only if it is a legally enforcable maintance payment set by the courts. In which case the recipient is liable to pay income tax on the payment received.

Otherwise if it is just an informal arrangement it has no "tax" effect.

    Regards

There is no tax relief on payments on behalf of a child.

Legally enforceable maintenance payments on behalf of ex-spouse are allowed as a deduction in calculating taxable income.
