Learning the 'puter side of things?

    Hey all,

    Have the basics down for Aperture/Shutter Speed/ISO, etc.

    Now, I'm not expert, and there's a lot I still need to learn (ie; I'd like to be using RAW 100% of the time, but I stick to JPG as I get lost when it comes to different software with RAW at times. Simple thing, but it's something I don't quite have the grasp of yet (though admittedly I haven't tried too hard)).

    Anyway, after looking through the before/after thread, I'm beginning to see that a lot of the things I really like about images I see online and such, is stuff that isn't really accomplished in-camera.

    Personally, I expirement with PP (paint.net being my favourite as it's simple windows-style menu system works for me) but I rarely try anything new or exciting in it. A bit of Contrast/Saturation boosts and now and again I'll go mad and really overexpose a shot for the sake of it.

    BUT... I would love to learn how to do this kinda stuff;

    etc. etc. (you get the jist of what I mean).

    So I was wondering if anyone knows of any classes or anything you can do to learn this? I remember a while ago a guy was doing a course in Drogheda for 8 weeks or something (an hour or so a week). I skipped on the idea because I didn't think I'd need it, but I'm regretting it now.

    What did ye guys do to get a good idea of PP? Pick up books? Do a course? Expirement endlessly? :confused:

    Cheers :)

    Courses...meh, don't really like the idea, especially seeing as there's so much free material available online. Save your money for useful things, like lenses... more equipment, etc. Everyone develops their own style of PP, copying someone else will only get you so far.

    Most photographers have blogs, especially the very big ones. There's plenty of Podcasts too, about anything and everything you can think of. Experimentation is the best thing I can think of tbh...

    Save the money you'd spend/waste on courses, and buy the latest edition of Lightroom [3]

    Seriously. You only have to fiddle about with it for a week or so, ask any questions on here you need answering or look up basic tutorials online. Youtube is full of them.

    LR can make anyone look good, even me! :D

    Purposely over-done on an under-exposed pic just to show removal of blemishes and brightening of the eyes, smoothened skin etc ,.

    I mean ... the one on the right is obviously the before! how did they get muddled up?? :eek::P
