Can you bed a synthetic stock ...? I have bedded my previous rifles which had wooden stocks and just wondered how hard it was ?

It can be done, depends on the synthetic material though.

Remington Varmint type stocks bed well (rem VSSF II)

SPS Type are not so good.

For instance for two materials to bond together well an irregular service like Timber which has absorption qualities.

However SPS type stocks can be made to adhere bedding materials, although it can be easier to buy a decent stock by times.

    My 2 Cent!

    What rifle have you ?

Is it the one with the bendy fore-end?

Not quite sure what you mean by bendy fore-end, there's some flex in it but wouldnt call it bendy....?

A friend of mine has one camo .223
It can bend with the Bipod on.

If the foreend touches the barrel it can affect the accuracy.
I know of a few guys that had them stiffened up.

Well was having bit of a practise this evening and wasnt gr8 grouping, can normally keep it within 2euro coin size group at 100 yds but not today.

With the mod on it sits close enough to the forend. Took stock off when I got home and there is a rubber piece inside the fore-end and you can see where this has been rubbing the barrel so whipped that out !! Was thinking of filling in the forend maybe to stiffen it a bit ?!

You have a fellow westmeath man that could help you out if you want!

I cut the little piece off my VTR and it is grouping well enough.

But I know it can do better.

Edi would make you a deadly stock for a Styer

I hope to get one off him soon, when I have a few other bits in. getting another Timney in the next week or so :D

Edi is ejg on here, he makes stocks. The fella in Athlone making rifles is Fergal White.

I've heard of the fore ends of some stocks being filled to strengthen them, I forget with what material though as I read it some time back. I've only shop handled Steyrs, one in particular had a really limp fore end (otherwise it was a fine rifle) which put me off considering it. I'm sure your problem is sortable!

What cal is your rifle by the way?

    Rifle is a 6.5.

Friend of mine had a Steyr and I think he filled the forend with something like isopon to stiffen it up ?

I hear Viagra is good too.:D

    Seriously though

Mate of mine has the bottom version.

It has a soft fore end on it.

I'll pass on the pill recommendation to him :D

Mate of mine Dusty87 has one.

They are hardier than the Real tree one AFAIK.
Another mate of mine has the real tree varmint and it is soft material.

Is there an adj trigger in your rifle as a matter of interest (kinda off thread)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,004 ✭✭✭tfox

    Adjustable and set trigger.

Cool, so you are happy with trigger then so.
A rebed and Recrown might improve your groups.

    And good Ammo.

I can shave my group by 6mm using better quality ammo alone.

Cheapest solution for accuracy in the short term.

Will stiffen the fore-end and give it a go and see what's what !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,004 ✭✭✭tfox

Took it apart this evening and forend looks plenty deep enough for filling with something !!

With moderator on and sitting on bipod there is very little clearance and takes very small movement to make it touch !!

Rifle is only bout 2yrs old so dont think it needs recrowning just yet, prob only fired 200 rounds!!

The difficulty is in the adhesion process, to get the 2 materials to bond together.

similar to the way you need a primer on metal before gloss paint or or it ewill flake off in sheets.

Timber works well as it is porous, polymers generally are not

took into bedding my rifle and stiffening the stock yesterday evening. Got 2 stainless stell 4mm rods inserted through holes i drilled in the ribs of the forend all the way down to under the recoil lug. Bedded the action and filled in the forend with liquid metal.

The difference in the rigidity of the stock is amazing, no bend or flex even with mod on and resting on bipod, action all v snug and tight in the stock now :D

Just need to wait for the rain to stop so can let fly with a few rounds !!

Slide a piece of paper along the barrel to ensure smoothness and even clearence.

Then if the rain stops you should be in Business.
It might not make a massive difference at first, but over time it should become more consistant.

Take a few pics of it apart today before you zero it!
Add it to the PIMP MY RIFLE thread :D:D

Dont worry there is plenty of clearance, even with mod on there is no way the barrel will touch the forend no matter which way a pull twist or push it !! Will post some pics this evening when I get honme :)

As promised here are some pics. You can see the 2 stainless rods in one. The other shows it after bedding, not the neatest I've ever done but has tightened the whole thing up lovely !! YOu can see in front of the mounting screwhole the bedding for the recoil lug, theres two notches on the lug which fit snug over the 2 cube shape lumps of bedding. Just have to give it a crack later on !!

It's actually a wonder that Styer did not do that in the first place, simple yet effective!;)

"I love it when a plan comes together"

Well done and good shooting. Nothing like a bit of DIY is there.

To me it's not the saving of a few $$$$$ (untruth say some people) but the satisfaction of achiving the result wanted.

I was thinking of my VTR fore-end, for the craic, getting say 6mm wide ~150mm long threaded bar, and two nuts.
Cut out slots to fit the threaded bar, and use the nuts to tension it in place, then fill with epoxy to make it look smooth.

Could be a cheap and very effective way of making the fore end rigid.

    Why sarcasm?

Threaded bar as a stressed member in the foreend of my rifle?
If you saw the fore end of my rifle threaded bar would fit if I nicked out a small piece of the raised parts of the injection moulded fore end

No sarcasm intented at all Tackleberry, was a roll of the eyes up in pondering what you suggested :)

I'm sure it will work, i do not know what the stock looks like so cannot comment on it ?! I ant to cut out slotsconsodered this but was reluct, went for drilling holes instead, not easy though !!

    Similar to below
    122286.jpg

insert 2 threaded bars left and right

    use nuts to pre stress

looks very possible with that quite wide and open forend, but dont think it will need too much tension otherwise it may start to distort the stock !!

Ah I'm only thinking 1/2 a turn or so.
I have a bit of threaded bar.
And a mate has some epoxy.
I'm ditching the stock anyway, getting an EDI G stock, however if it works I'm sure some other remmy user would take it off me ;)

Eventually got round to putting some holes in paper, top 3 above the red dot are at 100yds, bottom 2 are from 150. Shooting 140gr Federal Fusion

stray ones on the left were the girlfriend having a blast, not bad for her first time shooting a rifle :)
