NCT emissions test on a hybrid vehicle.

Curious about how they do an emissions test on a hybrid vehicle as you can't rev the engine unless the car is in drive and moving.

Specifically a Prius or RX 400h.

    Thanks

    They don't do the test.

if you put your foot down all the way in neutral on a Prius or RX400h the engine revs up (slightly).

Had the NCT test last week.

Passed the test but they have to post out the certificate.

They did not do the emissions test.

It's a joke really, toyota/Lexus even provided the ncts with the procedure of how to put there hybrids into inspection mode so the engine stays running and takes rev, and the still chose not to test it, I believe they don't brake test them either due to the regenerative braking system which is another easy way out for them just because they class the hybrids as full elec cars!!!!!

I wonder how they will test a Nissan Leaf? Should be fun come testing time :)

It should pass the emission test easily, unless you fart beside it.

I'll have my wine glass at the ready just in case I need to fart ;)

Will it stay running, if left sitting in neutral?
    They don't do the test.
They do, as the engine will not always cut out at idle. Say if the hybrid battery is depleted.

According to the NCT's own notes, hybrids are to be viewed as electric vehicles and don't require an emissions test.

    Rotary engines also aren't tested.

"Should be" according to the docs.

I have a hybrid. Engine didn't cut out at the last NCT and all the emissions values are present as a result. This time it did cut out and all values are 0.

Is that true? Yet another reason to buy an RX8.

    Yes it is true!

Yup, according to the nct manual and double checked with the ex NCT mechanic who started in my place recently.

Yup, and given that the RX-8 can start buring oil and give other mechanical trouble, it's just as well that passing the NCT emissions test is one less thing to worry about:D!

I think one of the big advantages of not having to pass an emissions test is that for example as the car gets older you can just simply decat it rather than replace it, which is a good thing because lots of modern cars just reach a stage after a few years where it is not economically viable to keep it on the road and fix it.

This will allow the car to be kept on the road for longer rather than having to do an expensive repair, so while obviously catalytic converters are good for our health and the enviornment, keeping a car on the road for longer and sparing us the pollution of making and importing a new one is obviously even better still.

AFAIK they have a databse of vehicles on their system that are exempt from emissions testing. If your vehicle is in that database it can pass with no emissions. If not you "fail" and have to have the cert posted out. At least that is how it was explained to me last year when my ev "failed" on emissions. The only smoke it generated was from the tyres when the guy finshed the inspection , dropped it into first and floored it out the back of the center. Didn't make me happy:eek: Hopefully this year will be less exciting.

    Got the cert posted out.

Don't think the tested the brakes either.

So I spent 50 euro to get the lights and the suspension checked.
