LoJack for Lapops

Anyway, I'm pricing an Dell Inspiron N5010, and getting an extended warranty. Usually get caught out with electronics do I insisted on that. The salesman claimed the warranty covered absolutely every possible scenario: drops, spills, theft, everything. I looked up the website and found they use LoJack to find stolen laptops. Seems to be rely effective in America, but they don't have the Garda Siochana looking for their stolen laptops. My questions are as follows:

1) How secure is this LoJack software? Is it removable by your local gearhead on the thieve for another hit?
2) How likely are Dell to replace the stolen goods if it can't be tracked? Or is the software itself my only safety net?
3) I've read how they track the laptops. And will the guards really go through with forcing ISP's to release the IP addresses of the last known location of the laptop?

May seem excessive but this laptop purchase us important to me. Starting college again thos autumn so funds will be low, plus if I lose any work i think id cry. Cheers in advance

I would get that in writing since I have full Gold Support and water damage, Theft, etc are NOT covered.

The Lo-Jack will use give then the IP address on the network it is connected to, and then they will pass it to the Garda which they will promptly file and do NOTHING about.

Best thing to do is have the Laptop as a named item on your home insurance so at least if its stolen/lost you will get some of the money back.

+1 having laptop as a named item on insurance is indeed a useful thing.

You should also have multiple encrypted backs up in a variety of places-eg a external hard drive in your house, a dropbox account and maybe even a off site area safe from physical damage.

And of course you should also encrypt the data on the laptop,i myself have full disk encryption, as well as files encrypted by truecrypt.

Something like mozy.com is cheap and reliable for data backup. Dropbox is a good suggestion also if you can fit within the free plan.
