possibly pregnant?

Hi, my girlfriend and I have always had safe sex, the last time being 5th June using condoms. she's always had very regular periods almost always to the exact day for years. She got her period in june but 3 days late. This month it is a week late. A week before it was due in July she notice a bit of blood emerge while at the gym. she was worried it was something called spotting and a sign she may be pregnant. we both presumed that because it came in june that it is unlikely she could be pregnant. Another factor is she's under a lot of stress with a parent who is very sick. Can anyone provide some advice? I know next step is to take a test and we plan to during the week when i can travel to be with her.
