I tried to transfer a few movies and files from my 1tb HDD to the playstation but it won't recognise it at all. Does the playstation even recognise hard drives or is it just USB sticks?

It does. Is your hard drive formatted in FAT or NTFS? Has to FAT/32

Do you have the right folder structure?

    Folder structure
Reference for the folder structure used on a removable USB storage device (flash drive, external hard-drive). The correct structure is essential when copying certain files to the PS3.

    MUSIC
    • Album Name (when copying whole album to drive)
      • Song title 01.mp3
      • Song title 02.mp3
    • Song from another album.mp3 (when copy individual songs)
    PICTURE
    • CIMG1387.JPG
    PS3
    • EXPORT
      • BACKUP (created via PS3 backup feature)
        • 200911131808 (date backup was performed, format=YYYYMMDDHHMM)
          • archive.dat
          • archive_00.dat
          • archive_[XX].dat
          • archive2.dat
          • archive2_00.dat
          • archive2_[XX].dat
      • PSV (PS1/PS2 game saves)
        • BESLES-544543032.PSV
    • SAVEDATA (PS3 game saves)
      • BCES00001_PROFILE
        • ICON0.PNG
        • PARAM.PFD
        • PARAM.SFO
        • PROFILE.SAV
      • BCES00078-GAMEAUTOSAVE
        • ICON0.PNG
        • ICON1.PAM
        • PARAM.PFD
        • PARAM.SFO
        • PIC1.PNG
        • SND0.AT3
        • USERDATA.DAT
    • THEME (new in firmware 2.0)
      • themename.p3t
    • UPDATE (firmware update file)
      • PS3UPDAT.PUP
    VIDEO
    • Name_of_video.mp4

Folder structure isn't essential really, just press triangle to view all contents.

your 1TB external is more than likely formatted in NTFS, and the ps3 will only read FAT32 formatted hard drives

ill bet 5e thats the problem

Can't remeber if you can format to fat 32 on vista or does it make you stick with NTFS, try the program below and the home personal version is free.

You will delete all the information on the Hard drive when you do this, and files are limited to 4GB or less so maybe set a partition on the drive to split it into a NTFS and FAT32 section so you can store files for the PS3 and still store larger ones for the PC as well.

Use partition magic to format harddrives over 32gb to fat32 (windows cant format a harddrive over 32gb to fat23)

My hard drive is in ntfs as well. Crap anyway, I have a huge amount of data I can't exactly paste somewhere else, while I reformat the drive! Any way of doing it without clearing the drive?

Not really, you could always just try to partition the free space, not sure how well that'd work though as you might corrupt some files!

I'm new to this, so I'll have to look up how to do that. I have two hard drives, a 1tb ntfs and a 500gb fat32. Gonna use the latter for the ps3 for the moment. Much better stuff on the former though.

I would partition any free space on it to fat32 using partition magic, then copy as much as u can to thay partition and copy the rest to a laptop or 2 then using partiton magic delete the ntfs partition and extend the fat32 partition u made earlier, then copy any remaining data from laptops etc back onto it
