I'm also interested in finding out more about camping stoves but I'm kind of interested in the ones that have 2 rings and a grill like this http://www.campingaz.com/uk/p-23886-camping-chef174.aspx but it seems the gas cylinders are about 80 quid... does anyone know if thats right? How long would this cylinder last? And more importantly... is there a cheaper alternative?

That seems to be the case for those cookers alright, I phoned a few shops around the place that sell camping stuff and it's around €80 or €90 for the gas. It comes in a tank around the same size as those Heineken mini kegs. And you also need some hose tubing and a gas regulator, which doesn't seem to come with the cookers.

Does anyone here have any info about this stuff? What type of cookers take the smaller gas bottles the ones in Argos? Or can they all take that gas?

Hey Recon, thanks for your reply, do you know if these bottles are then refillable and if so how much it costs to refill.... seems to be a real lack of information available on about this!

No problem, I'm just home now after buying some stuff. Ended up just going to a camping shop on York Street in Cork. Got 2 single hobs cookers that come in cases, like this, that use this type of gas. But the place I got them had them for €3 each or 4 for €10. The cookers cost €24 each, they're €21.99 in argos but the camping shop was €5 cheaper for the gas and argos was more expensive for everything else anyone and there's the whole supporting smaller businesses bla bla bla. Back to camping stuff!

The bigger cookers, like the one you're looking for, generally need the larger gas bottles, like this or this. The R904 (the smaller of those two) costs between €80 and €90 and between €20 and €30 for a refill.

Since I wasn't getting a cooker with the grill (not quite prepared to fork out for a more expensive gas bottle and cooker yet!) I picked with one of these!

Getting the stuff together today for the camping trip and heading out tomorrow til Friday. Give me a shout if you've any other questions after that and I'll let you know if I learn anything...

Thanks so much for the info, helps to make sense of it in my head! We're going camping at the weekend, (newbies obviously:D) and so far I have forked out for a five man tent, sleeping bags and air matresses. Still need to get chairs and a table! Am thinking I might just buy the cheaper one ring cooker and the toasting rack like you suggest (and a couple of disposable barbecues) and leave the bigger one until we decide if we're going to go again! Thanks again

Enjoy your trip... hope the rain stays away and the sun shines!
