Not sure if anyone has seen this it has been reported a few days ago. Sony has filed Patents for a new stereoscopic system that would allow two gamers to enjoy multiplayer without the need for split-screen using a 3D TV.

The patents, which were spotted by Broke My Controller, were filed a year ago and published last week.

They describe a way of rendering separate images on one screen, and depict glasses which can then filter them. Digital Foundry's Richard Leadbetter explains:
Stereo 3D is all about generating two different images - one per eye. The glasses work by making sure that the right images are sent to the correct eyes.
The theory here is that instead of having stereo 3D, the glasses each point to either the left or right "eye" view, which will be the view of each player in-game. So two screens are being generated, one goes to each player. Simple!

    split3d.jpg
That was form the patent, player 1 sees A,B,C, While player 2 sees 1,2,3.

This is great, it will help rationalize my new TV.

That's absolutely amazing if they can implement it. Sure, it won't have a huge effect since the evolution of online multiplayer, but it'll open so many doors if possible.

While the above patent does sound interesting, I'd still be extremely wary of splashing out big money for a first gen 3D device. On a related note, you may find this interesting too.

Personally, I find the downsides of 3D TV in the home (with the aid of glasses) to far outweigh the positives. Doubly so in the context of gaming. :o

I won't be getting a new TV for a while, so i won't be getting a 1st gen and i have to replace a good 55" so i'll be waiting a while for cheaper larger sizes.

The last airbender was bad film no matter how many dimensions were there, Despicable Me 3D translated into what even rival studios said was "amazing" attendance of Friday's $21.7 million and Saturday's $21.3M for a $60.1M weekend opening, so that percentage is wrong from the what i've read. the 60% seems to be around right for the opening weekends on 3D vs 2D.

I genuinely don't like this trend towards 3D, it kind of feels like they're ramming it down our throat (E3 was dominated by it in many ways). I'm a serious 3D skeptic in any case, barring exceptions when the film / game is built from the ground up with the technology in mind, but ultimately it's more distracting and gimmicky than anything, plus extremely detrimental to the converted visuals in many cases. Perhaps when 3D TVs come down in price, I'll be interested in tech, although this theory could be useful if it works. However, until I see a developer that really gets the selling points of 3D, I'm not interested. Bar the 3DS, of course, but that's only because a) it's built with 3D in mind and b) Kid Icarus may be fantastic :pac:

The problem i found with 3D is i spend half the time looking through the glasses then the other half looking over the top to see if the 3D works !!!

Are you guys kidding me ?

This sony effort is amatuer compared to what microsoft have in the pipeline - steerable, face tracking, multi-viewer different image, 3d display system that DOESN'T require glasses:

I like the title above. Its like the headline from a tabloid story, interesting but misleading!

Basically, Sony has filed a patent on using the 3D tecjnology in their TVs to allow for split-screen multiplayer gaming, without splitting the screen. Basically, instead of outputting two similar images to achieve a 3D effect, they have composed a system where the image is split for two people. So one person will see their character, health meter etc. and the other will see theirs, all from the same TV, using the 3D TV and glasses.

I am at work so can't find the link but are you more interested in the technology now? Personally I love in-person multiplayer gaming more than online so this sounds very interesting.

Good, honest article about PS3 3D here.

General conclusion seems a bit ho-hum - briefly impressive, but ultimately not all that useful!

The PS3 really hasn't the muscle to do 3D properly. For the 3D to be done properly the games visuals have to be rendered twice from 2 different perspectives and the PS3 struggles to render it's best looking games once. It'smostly creating the effect by using the z buffer data to displace objects and the perspective and it means objects end up looking like 2D objects in with no 3D depth.

As for the split screen thing, you still need glasses to do it which is a big put off and it probably won't work for more than 2 people.

So both people are just seeing a 2d image?

Wasn't there a tv that did this years ago without glasses but it required you to stand at the right place so it never went into production. I think it would be a nice feature if you already happen to have a 3dTV but in no way does it make me want to buy one.

No I'd say it's a 3D image as well but 2D would also work. With a 120Hz TV you could get a 30fps 3D image for both people.

There is still a significant cost in doing this though. That being said, some of the bigger titles are still going for rendering two images. Killzone 3, for example, has had its horizontal resolution cut in half, something which many games running at 30fps mayl have to deal with. The alternative is cutting the frame rate but that's only really an option for the games running at 60fps.

While it's nice (in ways at least) to see Sony pushing the whole 3D thing, I do wish they'd do it in a generation which can run at 1080p60 properly rather than this one. :o

Doesn't 3d look like crap and cause headaches at 30fps?

The nVidia thing needs a 120HZ monitor for one person for this reason.

Nope, if it did most of Sony's big 3D offerings would be driving paracetamol sales through the roof.

Sky has confirmed that its new 3D channel will become available to residential subscribers on October 1, after the service launched to pubs and clubs in April.
