Thinking of canceling Sky

I was just wondering, if I cancel my Sports + Family pack with Sky, cancel the whole subscription, are there any channels like RTE, TV3 etc that I will still be able to get on that cancelled card?

This costs me €64 a month and I'm looking into the Sky player via xbox 360 which would work out at around €10 a month. Only thing is we can't get a decent RTE reception and have to watch it through Sky.

Have thought about that as well, but if I can get RTE etc without a subscription it would be better.

You get all the main UK channels free, more than with a card.

RTE, TG4 and TV3 are free via aerial. Works on all the TVs.
A good aerial is only a couple of months sub.

    I'm not renewing.

You can drop down to the minimum package (€22/month) and get RTE and probably the majority of the non-premium channels you watch now. As mentioned many times on this forum, you can also remove your Sky card and restart the box. This will give you a flavour of what to expect if you cancel your sub - many find it's more than enough.

I can't see the Xbox idea as being a viable option to be honest. It's not really suitable for use on the primary TV. It's more suited to a second TV in a kids bedroom. You'll also need decent broadband for it to be watchable even on a smaller screen. Plus, you don't want to be firing up a console every time you want to watch TV.

As far as I know it's around £15 (€22?) for the very basic package when you are not an active subscriber - and I doubt it would include any of the Irish stations.

I turned off my 2nd sky box which is now a free to air box and you get all the free to air channels which include the BBC's, UTV's but unfort no RTE's you need an irish aerial to get them, but if you want to just turn off your movies and sports you can drop the package down to sumwhere in the region of €30 a month. If you log onto the sky website you can go through all their packages and pick the channels you want and you'll be able to work out how much it's going to cost you a month before you ring them. Btw you have to give them 31 days notice before you can turn off any channel!!!! Hope this helps you make you decision:)

    - cancel sky

    - Get a roof top aerial for rte, tv3, tg4

    - never look back :)

    - look into a freesat+ box

You'll be surprised how much of the tv you watch is actually free.

Have to agree....cancelled Sky 2 years ago...got a Freesat HD box in Argos in the north and a cheap sagem picnic MPEG4 box off the web....the only channel i don't see is TV3 but ITV covers most of thet......best move i ever made..!!

The picnic will be obsolete though, I don't think RTE2 HD part time is simulcast. It would have to replace the SD RTE2. The basic Saorview spec is HD, and downconversion on SCART for non-HDTV (regular TV).

I cancelled over a year ago and no regrets.

I have crystal clear irish tv now as well as freesat plus (free to air english sat chennels).

I can record my Irish tv via play tv on the PS3.

I bought the cheapest box available last September in Newry (Sagem Picnic Box) as I knew that it would possibly only last a year or so before I would have to replace it and they would broadcast HD content. I also expect that they will change the spec in two or three years again possibly so that's why I was only willing to pay 19.99 Sterling as I knew that eventually it would become obsolete and they were a bargain at the time even though their power supply units seem to be faulty. They did it with MPEG2 before and then changed to MPEG4 and all the UK TVS sold here had and have obsolete tuners unless in UK Freeview reception areas so what will stop them from doing it again? It could very well happen whether we like it or not. Sky Movie channels are rubbish and unless you are a Premiership soccer freak then Sky is a complete rip off and a waste of money. I never subscribed and never will to Sky even though it is miles better than UPC both in terms of picture quality and the amount of channels. I remember my Dad years ago ringing up to Subscribe to Sky and nobody ever turned up to the house so he just went FTA and did the installation himself with the help of my brother who lives nearby. after that. The vast amount of the subscription channels show rubbish American and British shows and poor films and repeat both to death. Some people have more money than sense. They will keep increasing their prices for sports packages every year. As pa990 said cancel Sky guys and gals and keep your money in your pocket and better still, in this country. :)
